owner playoff expectation

When expanding the number of teams in the playoffs, the owner does not adjust his playoff expectation to the new expanded playoff format. Managers of teams headed to the playoffs will be fired for not meeting the expectation of reaching the playoffs, which doesn't make sense. Perhaps the owner's expectation should be linked to winning%.

I have a problem that might fall right in with owner playoff expectation. The final score at the end of the season. I took a 1989 Dodger team that historically went 77-83 and guided it to a strong 92-70 record, finishing 7 games out. I was given a score of 22 and basically told that I should be ashamed of myself. I won 97 games and finished 2nd the year before, and was given a similar admonishment. It seems to me that unless you win the world series every single season that you are going to get an awful score. Some of us are managing historical seasons with historical transactions. We cannot "stack" our ballclub unless it was stacked historically. I don't like being told that I did a lousy job because I could only improve the team by 15 games over what they did historically.

The owner's expectations are generated on Opening Day. As long as you change the playoff format before then, the owner will adjust his expectations.

I always change the playoff format as soon as possible in the offseason, long before opening day.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe what you're saying is that if you expand the playoffs (so that, say, 4 wildcard teams make it instead of 2), the two bottom wildcard teams don't register as having made the playoffs in the eyes of their owners. Correct?

If so, that definitely sounds like a bug.

I don't think it is an automatic firing. After decades of dominance I've missed the playoffs 2 seasons in a row. In both cases the owner expected the team to make the playoffs. I think 3 strikes and I'm out though.

That's not what he's saying, though. He's saying that managers of teams that DO make the playoffs are getting fired, even though that was the expectation of the owner.
