Another assortment of questions

Thanks for the detailed answers I got last time around. I play with 40/30/20/10, scouting on very high.

1.) A lot of my star players perform very inconsistently from year to year. I read that players with high greed and low desire for win can slack off after signing a big contract. I believe that has happened to me, but many other players with great work ethic and high desire for win who are highly rated and coming off of great years simply do not perform the next year. I've had a lot of pitchers who I thought was going to have HOF quality careers but then simply drop off after 3 years. Any thoughts on why that may be and how to get my players to perform consistently?

2.) When do you decide to bench someone? Say if my 2 star/5 star 2nd year OF with 15 contact is hitting .240 through June, do you sit him? Send him back down? It seems like the more I play the less important I find ratings as they often do not reflect stats.

3.) How much do previous year stats contribute to current year stats? For the settings I'm running I'm finding that they matter a lot more than I thought. How much in general should you weigh past stats as opposed to ratings when looking at players?

4.) What are the advantages of playing with stats only as opposed to having ratings? If playing stats only, what are some general settings people use?

5.) How does Talent Change Randomness work? Does it make changes after every season? Does it affect players of all ages? If for example I have Trevor Bauer and I tweaked TCR to very high, does it mean that he may become a career minor leaguer in one game but the next Bob Feller in another game?

6.) If TCR does change true ratings every season, does it mean that it'd be wiser to wait until after the first season to deal for prospects to see who will actually develop?

This is called reality. There have been countless instances in baseball of star players who have bad years or have occasionally being inconsistent. In Major League Baseball, very few players produce roughly the same numbers from year-to-year. For a perfect example, look at Roger Clemens and particularly his 1992 vs. 1993 seasons. He had other major increases in ERA and WHIP in 1995, 1999, 2002, and 2007. People carried on like he was one of the greatest pitchers in the history of the game, but he had mediocre seasons at times. And this can happen to multiple players on the same team in a given year, which is why some teams underachieve and don't meet expectations.

I will typically sit out players for a bit when they're slumping, but there's no need to bench them permanently or send them down if they're hitting .240. That's not awful. If you have a hot prospect who is ripping up AAA and plays the same position, then maybe you could consider a demotion. Otherwise, consider rotating players at that position, giving the .240 hitter some favorable lefty/righty matchups when he starts, and otherwise trying to give him a break.

3.) How much do previous year stats contribute to current year stats? For the settings I'm running I'm finding that they matter a lot more than I thought. How much in general should you weigh past stats as opposed to ratings when looking at players?

Stats can be misleading. So can ratings sometimes, but I place most emphasis on ratings, and I'm sure that virtually everyone does until the stats are consistently substandard. Keep in mind that many people use AI player evaluating settings that place 40% emphasis on ratings, 40% emphasis on current year stats, 15% on the previous year's stats, and 5% on stats from two years ago. I recommend doing the same as a human manager, though I tend to lean more toward ratings overall.

4.) What are the advantages of playing with stats only as opposed to having ratings? If playing stats only, what are some general settings people use?

Search for threads on this topic in the general OOTP 14 forum. You'll find a lot of useful advice from people like The Wolf. Generally people turn off ratings but keep the current/potential star ratings, but some turn those off as well. If you play this way, then you'll have to rely almost entirely on scouting reports and stats. I would recommend getting much more familiar with the game first and delving into this approach once you find that you can dominate the AI.

5.) How does Talent Change Randomness work? Does it make changes after every season? Does it affect players of all ages? If for example I have Trevor Bauer and I tweaked TCR to very high, does it mean that he may become a career minor leaguer in one game but the next Bob Feller in another game?

Yes, that's pretty much my understanding. You can control the potential wildness of swings compared to real life or current talent.


6.) If TCR does change true ratings every season, does it mean that it'd be wiser to wait until after the first season to deal for prospects to see who will actually develop?

If you have development turned on, then ratings are going to change every year regardless of your TCR setting. Some players will stay the same from one year to the next, but many will experience slight changes. And their ratings will fluctuate during the season as well. Prospects will still be a risk regardless. Obviously, after one season, some of the prospects will have made improvements while others may have dipped. So that may help you refine your targets, but even if they look like they're on the rise, they might level off or eventually degrade in future years. So there are no guarantees.

TCR works continuously. The very name tells you it works randomly not seasonally. Yes it affects players of all ages. The manual indicates this by saying that changes occur throughout a players career.

I don't know where you got the idea that TCR changes "true ratings" (not sure what you mean by that). Talent Change Randomness clearly means that talent changes not ratings. That means that a TCR induced talent change may or may not affect ratings. It's random!

TCR doesn't work by season it is continuous throughout a players career. Waiting for prospects to develop first will not make any difference as the changes can happen at any time.

I'll offer this advice. Pick a TCR value that you are comfortable with and then forget about it. Players will develop reach a plateau and age. I happen to like 100. You may prefer a different value.

I don't think that is the case at all. It could be a different interpretation of the paragraph below. From the Manual

The Talent Change Randomness option is a numeric value from 1 to 200 that controls how random player talent changes are. For example, a 200 here would mean that talent changes are highly random, making it more likely that players would experience significant changes in talent over the course of their career. Tweak this if necessary if you feel that player talent changes are either too drastic or too conservative. 100 is the default.
I read that as saying the changes will be more or less likely not that they will be of differing values (amplitude).

I guess it's semantics, but to me, wild swings mean exactly what the manual indicates: players will have more significant changes in their talent throughout their career, so the changes in talent values will probably differ from the those you'd typically see when the TCM is lower.

Stats only mode is great but you should master the regular game before you try it. It's basically Hard Mode OOTP.
