Closer never being an All Star
I've had this issue with OOTP 13 and now it's still around for OOTP 14. My closers are never an All-star. And my closers have generally been one of the best in the league. Has this happened to anybody else? Was anybody able to fix it?
I know I've read a couple of threads before where people were thinking the "OOTP selection committee" might not really care about Saves, but more about Innings Pitched or WAR or VORP or whatever, but it's constantly a case where my guy is at least a top 5 relief pitcher and doesn't get selected to the All-star game, even though 6 or 7 closers were selected I know, I can just do my own all-star rosters and include him. I know, it doesn't matter...but it's just odd never seeing my guy on the list and it's been happening from OOTP13 as well as this year. I was hoping it would have gotten fixed. When I started my career in OOTP13, Jordan Walden was my closer for pretty much his whole career and got selected to the ASG 9 times. Then after he retired and I got a new (fictional) guy who wound up saving 600 games in his career but was never selected. I thought maybe it had to do with his profile. Then my next closer for the next 10 years always solid but never selected. I transferred over the "saved game" to OOTP14 during that period. I just had a new guy this year and he wasn't selected (Sorry if this is a known issue and someone has already gotten an official response, I tried searching for something, but couldn't find anything). I took a screenshot of this years closers who were selected (I'm at the all-star break now). Yes, my guy (Jerry Phillips) wasn't #1 but I can't see why he wouldn't be selected over Greg Slater or Tony Jacobs. Previous years it would have been even more of an obvious miss. |

Easy. The game hates Houston.
Just kidding. I have no idea. WAR leader, ERA leader, WHIP leader, FIP leader. How is the team doing? Just a shot in the dark, but maybe it has something to do with team performance and/or market/fan support/fan loyalty. |

I would go along the lines of local and national fan base for the player as in how well he is known. that would help a great deal. Just like in the real world.

I have noticed the same thing. Several times my team (NY Mets - good market, fan base, etc.) has had by far the best closer (leading all closers in ERA, W-L, Saves, K's). But yet never chosen to the all-star team. Never thought that much about it until I read your post. Figured I would chime in just to say that, Yes, I have experienced that also. |

just a note... I would love to see how the voting is going when the voting begins to when it ends... then allow you the user to add say for example 100,000 votes to that total if you choose. Why not involve the user in the process.

Unless he's on an absolutely terrible team he should have been picked...and even then.

Appreciate the feedback guys,
@olivertheorem - Nah man, it's 2044, the Houston Astros are the kings of MLB these days! @JPL86 - I know I've seen a thread before asking about it, probably in the OOTP13 or 12 forum, so I know I'm not the only one to have this happen too. Obviously it's not happening to everyone though... I thought about posting it as a bug, but it just sounds weird, "My guy should be an All-star and he's not, please fix this bug! kthxbye!" @ronster - love that idea. Just being able to see how many votes each guy got would be cool. - My team is doing well this year, in first place, so it's not because we're in last place. Possibly it could be cause my guy is a first time closer (and not as known), but it's happened with my previous two closers who were established and "extremely popular". Below is my previous closer who has a year-long injury this year. It doesn't show what he had at the All-Star break, but obviously he dominated many years and, you'll have to trust me on this one, he didn't get all of those saves in the 2nd half every year. ![]() Like I said, it's not a big deal...but it's just odd and I wonder how many others have this happening to them as well. |

it sure is a shame we cant get career splits .... I do have a question for ya. What does it say for your city in your financials about the city and fan base??? My first thought possibly its small to fair as to size of it compared to say NYC which be extreme and strong fan base. Thinking that might account for "some" NOT all all-star voting issues. Just sharing my thoughts, I agree with you he should have been on a all-star team even if he didnt play.

My league is like, right before closers are used, so while teams do not have a technical closer, they use the stopper role for them, so they are still listed as MR.
My 'stopper' is unbelievable, his stats are amazing. He pitches a ton of innings, always near the top of the leaderboards in ERA, in strikeouts, yet is always passed over for the All-star game. Always. He could literally be considered my MVP. I have a stellar rotation, but he is a lockdown guy, and he pitches so often that any lead is virtually safe, yet for whatever reason, the all-star voters hate him.

Saves aren't a good indication of value to a team, especially on a team that wins 100 games every year.

No, but they matter in RL All-Star voting, for good or ill, and therefore a case can be made that they should matter for that purpose in OOTP.
You can always manually pick and choose the WAR leaders (or other leaders, as your preference runs). |
