112-pounds tournament announced

Mexico City: In cooperation with Inside the Ropes the Mexian Boxing Federation announced a 112-pounds tournament last night. Eight of the best American flyweights will fight for glory. The competitors entering into the tournament are Juan Francisco Estrada, Brian Viloria, Hernan Marquez, Edgar Sosa, Juan Carlos Reveco, Luis Concepcion, Giovanni Segura and Ulises Solis.

Divided in two groups a four men, each fighter faces three different opponents in a point-based competition. The points will be awarded as fallows:

2:0 for a win
1:1 for a draw
0:2 for a loss

After the group stage, the fighters finishing in the top two positions in each of the groups will progress to the semi-finals. The winners of the respective semi-final bouts will advance to the final. All bouts will scheduled for 12 rounds.

The group stage matchups are as fallows:

Viloria vs Sosa
Concepcion vs Solis

Giovanni Segura (29-3-1 (25 KOs)) UD12 Juan Francisco Estrada (24-2-0 (18 Kos))
Nearly seven rounds of back and forth action, two late knockdowns and a bleeding winner was the record of a remarkable fight. The bout between the two Mexicans starts fairly even with both man exchanging hard blows. At the second half of the fight it was Giovanni Segura to take over control of the fight. Late in round 10 Estrada walks into a combination of Segura and hit the canvas for the first time in this fight. The second time was early in last round but again Estrada was able to continue however he was clearly behind on the scorecards. All three judges (as well as Harold Lederman) scoring the bout 117-110 in favour to Giovanni Segura.

Hernan Marquez (35-3-0 (26 KOs)) UD12 Juan Carlos Reveco (30-1-0 (16 Kos))
At the end it seems to be a clear and dominant performance from Hernan Marquez but it was a hard piece of work for the 25-years-old Mexican. The hard hitting Argentinian Reveco embodys danger at all twelve rounds and rocked Marquez several times during the bout. At the end it was the accuracy of Marquez to make the difference. Round after round the Mexican ensure winning the rounds, consequently the judges scores the bout 119-109, 118-110 and 118-110. The score goes conform with ringside expert Al Bernstein who scores the bout 118-110.

Thank you mate. I hope it is at least a bit entertaining. I will focus on fighters from Central and South America, as well as from the Caribbeans and a few fighters from North America. So it is a kind of narrow (in terms of fighters and weight classes) attempt but also (and hopefully) an entertaing one. To mix it a little bit up I will include female fighters aswell.

Luis Concepcion (28-3-0 (21 KOs)) MD12 Ulises Solis (35-3-3 (22 KOs))
Among the spectators in Monterray there was hardly no clash of opinions - in a tight afair both man where showing heart. Especially Ulises Solis gains the hearts of his fellow countrymen with an courageous performance. After only 18 seconds in round one Luis Concepcion hits Solis with an flashing uppercut and Solis went down but comes back into the bout and was stealing some rounds. In round seven it was again an uppercut who floors the Mexican. But once again Solis manage a comeback and wins the next rounds. With his methodical approach Concepcion was able to gain the last rounds but was shocked cold in the last minute of the very last round. Ulises Solis unleashed a hook to Concepcions head. Admittedly the Panamanian makes it to his feet but Ulises Solis at the latest wins over the crowd though not the judges. Luis Concepcion wins a close majority decision by scores of 114-111, 112-112 and 113-112.

Brian Viloria (32-4-0 (19 KOs)) KO12 Edgar Sosa (49-7-0 (29 KOs))
In a classical match-up between boxer Brian Viloria and slugger Edgar Sosa it was the boxer who takes the slugger to school. Scoring four knockdowns - three of them in the twelfth round with the last one finally ending up the bout - and landing more than 51% of his punches (in comparison to Sosas 32% punching accuracy) it was a dominant performance by Brian Viloria. After this hard fight Sosas camp announced that the Mexican maybe needs some time to recover from the knockout but will definitely stay in the tournament.

The second matchday of the group stages will see the battles for the semi-finals between Brian Viloria and Luis Concepcion in the blue group and Hernan Marquez vs. Giovanni Segura in the red one. Also we will see the fights between Juan Carlos Reveco vs. Juan Francisco Estrada and Ulises Solis vs. Edgar Sosa - with only the winners keeping their semi-final-hopes alive.
