Going... going... gone!
Miggy belts his 5th HR in 4 games, a nice 2-run shot to LF! Wowzers. He's unstoppable. |

Tigers 7, Twins 6. [Boxscore]
Summary: Late inning surges help Tigers to squeeze past the Mighty Twinkies. Pitching: Porcello was jumped on, no two ways about it - 5 innings, 10 hits, a walk, 5 runs (1 HR) against just 2 K's. As Conn_Chris remarked before, the Twins become the Mighty Twinkies whenever they play Detroit. They certainly proved that tonight. Downs took over at the bottom of the 6th, and did pretty good - 1.2 IP, allowing 2 hits and a solo-shot homer to Willingham (his 2nd of the game). Ortega, Benoit (Win; 2-0, 1.29), and Valverde (save: 5) combined for the remaining 2.1 innings, standing like Stonewall (T.J. Jackson) at the first battle of Bull Run (First Manassas to the Southerners) and combining for 4 punchouts. They gave the offense time to rally. Way to go, guys! Offense: The offense excelled, coming up with 15 hits and 3 walks, every starter getting at least one hit. Miggy continued his hot, hot, hot streak by bashing his 14th HR (5 in the last 4 games!), a 2-run, 391-foot blast to Left. Infante collected 3 hits to raise his average to .323 (what a rock he's been for the Tigers!), and Fielder, Martinez, and Peralta had 2 hits apiece. Pena (3) and Peralta (12) collected doubles as part of the offensive barrage. It was a great game to watch, even if Fien and Burton decided to play a little chin music drama. Several batters, including Miggy, weren't too thrilled, to say the least. That's old-fashioned baseball, but, man, you don't want to piss Miggy off, because he'll make you pay, and pay, and pay some more. Also, anyone notice that they're walking Miggy whenever there's men on bases in close situations? The Twins did that last night, and Prince made them pay, just like he has several times this year. I guess you gotta choose your poison, and Prince is just a little less deadlier than Miggy. Next game: Friday, Twins (18-26, 9-13 away) @ Tigers (26-19, 14-7 home), 7:08 Eastern. TV: FS-D. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Projected starters: Deduno (first MLB appearance this year) vs. Sanchez (4-4, 2.77). |

At least it was a legit hit from a great player. Too bad he had superior stuff tonight.

Tigers 6, Twins 0. [Boxscore]
Summary: Sanchez pitches an absolute beauty! Pitching: Sanchez threw a gorgeous game [video], and it's a real pity he lost the no-hitter. At least it was Joe Mauer, a heck of a hitter in his own right, who broke it up. In the end, credit Sanchez with a complete game, 1 hit and 3 walks allowed, and 12 K's. His record goes to 5-4, 2.38 - with a WHIP of 1.12 and 80 punchouts in 64.1 innings. Anyone think the Tigers overpaid him with the new contract this past off-season? I don't. He's earned every cent of it so far. Offense: Who needed offense with the way Sanchez pitched? Irregardless, the Cats provided some nice sparks, collecting 11 hits and 3 walks, striking out just 6 times (3 of which belonged to Avila. Poor dude. He just can't get going. )Leading the charge was Andy Dirks, who went 3-5 (all singles), but the big tamale on the batting side was (hard as it is to believe...) the donkelly, who went 1-4 with a 2-run, 357-foot tater (2) to right. Nice shot! This game is definitely one to remember. Attaboy, Anibal! Next game: Twins (18-27, 9-14 away) @ Tigers (27-19, 15-7 home), 4:08 Eastern. TV: FS-D, MLBN. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Projected starters: Walters (first game played in MLB this year) vs Fister (5-1, 3.62). |

Twins 3, Tigers 2. [Boxscore]
Summary: Tigers come out on the wrong end of a pitching duel. Pitching: Fister tossed a solid game, but unfortunately, that wasn't enough. He went 7 innings, giving up 3 runs (1 HR) on 8 hits and a walk while whiffing 7. Taking the loss, he falls to 5-2, 3.65. Putkonen, Coke, and Ortega combined for the final 2 frames, surrendering just 1 hit and a walk while punching out 3. They held the line. Way to go, boys. Offense: The Cats just couldn't get it going, despite 9 hits and a walk. Guess the Twinkies just had their number. The highlight for the home team was Peralta's solo-shot homer (5) to right in the 6th that put the Tigers to within a run. Hunter also added a run-scoring double (14), and Infante contributed a 2-bagger of his own (7). Brayan Pena continued to sparkle, going 3-4 to raise his BA to .328. If he keeps this up, and Avila his poor performance, I can imagine he'll become the starter until Avila gets himself straightened out. It was a good, solid low-scoring game. Would have been nice to see the Tigers win, but them's the breaks, folks. Next game: Twins (19-27, 10-14 away) @ Tigers (27-20, 15-8 home), 1:08 Eastern. TV: FS-D. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Projected starters: Pelfrey (3-4, 6.69) vs. Scherzer (6-0, 3.61) |

Tigers 6, Twins 1. [Boxscore]
Summary: Tigers bash Twinkies, thanks to Scherzer and Garcia's pinch-hit triple as they take 3 out of 4. Pitching: Scherzer continued his winning ways, tossing a solid 6 innings (3 hits and 3 walks), punching out 6 as he surrendered just 1 run. He improves to 7-0, 3.42. He's certainly matured into an elite pitcher since he came over to the Cats. Putkonen (0.2 innings, 1 walk) and Smyly (2.1 innings, 1 walk and 3 K's) slammed the door shut on the Twins to secure the victory. What's gotten into the bullpen? They've been like a brick wall, not that I'm complaining, mind you. It's nice to see them performing like this, but it's out of character! ![]() Hope it lasts for some time. Offense: Hunter blasted a solo-shot (2) into the RF seats [video] to open up the scoring in the first - his 299th, by the way. Then, in the 4th, Fielder poked his 13th double into the left-center gap [video] (nearly a HR - about 4 feet up, would have cleared the fences) to score Miggy. (Picked up an interesting stat from Rick Thompson's Twitter feed: "Fielder is now 6x6 with eight RBI following the last six walks issued to Miguel Cabrera." Amazing!) The 6th was the big inning for the Cats: After Avila singled in Miggy, the bases became loaded with a walk to Infante. Up came Avisail Garcia, pinch-hitting for the donkelly. Result? A blistering bases-clearing triple (nearly a HR, just like Prince's double) for Garcia's first-ever triple! Man, that boy can FLY for such a big guy. Other than that, the team didn't get much production, with just 6 hits and 5 walks, but they made the most of it, which is the ideal situation. Way to go, Boys! Next game: Monday, Pittsburgh (30-19, 12-10 away - doesn't count today's game still in progress) @ Tigers (28-20, 16-8 home), 1:08 Eastern. TV: FS-D, MLBN. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Projected starters: Former Twin Liriano (aka Tigers headache) (3-0, 1.00) vs Verlander (5-4, 3.66). Tigers will be wearing special camouflage caps and a camouflage "D" on their home uniforms in honor of our troops, past and present. |

Injury updates.
Injury update on Austin Jackson:
He's eligible to come off the DL today, but he's apparently not healed enough from his left hamstring pull. His return date is still to be determined. The good thing? Tigers aren't really missing him. Dirks/Infante have done a pretty good job in the leadoff slot. I'd have to say that's an excellent discovery, because AJ has been the table setter for quite some time. It's nice to find out the offense can function without his bat. The bad news? The longer Jackson is off, the longer it'll take for him to get back into form, which could be problematic if something happens to Dirks or Infante or they stop hitting. Also, I'm not quite that confident the defense in CF is what it should be. The donkelly is a competent glove (don't ask me about his bat, I'll just say something extremely impolite), and Dirks/Garcia are adequate defenders, but no one plays CF as well as AJ. Hopefully, he'll return soon. No word on Dotel. At least they're not really missing him, which says a lot about the BP right now. While they're still looking for help, there won't be any moves in that direction until near the trading deadline. |

IMO, Dirks should be in center with Garcia starting in LF. Or bring up Q-Berry, who isn't that great, but is better than thedonkelly.

Berry's one-dimensional - speed - doesn't even have that good of a glove, and he's not much of a hitter. I agree the Dirks/Garcia combo would be nice, but there's considerations there. Dirks is a lefty, hence, he's not gonna start often against LHP and will get yanked with a lefty on the mound. He platoons with Tuiasosopo (RHB) for obvious reasons. Plus, in Skipper's mind, neither of those two are every-day players like Hunter and AJ. Garcia is just getting started, so he's not going to play every day at this point in his career. You don't start a colt with every race in a field of thoroughbreds. You give him time to grow into the role. If he was a starter and got mired in an Avila-like funk, it could damage his confidence or worse. They pick their spots to start him, as they should. There will be time later to play him every-day, maybe next year or the one after that. |

Tigers 6, Pirates 5. [Boxscore]
Summary: Tigers hang on to win - barely. Pitching: It looks like Verlander is back to his normal self! Throwing a solid 7 innings, he gave up 3 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, while fanning 13. He earned the win, so his record goes to 6-4, 3.68.Benoit tossed the 8, and uncharacteristically, struggled, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits with a punch-out. Of course a little of that is Fielder's fault, with a throwing error (3rd error of the year). He earned his 7th hold. Valverde slammed the door shut for his 6th save, only permitting a hit. Not much of a "gas can" moment, but at least he got them out when it counted. Offense: Peralta lead the parade by going 4-4 with a double (13) and 3 RBI to raise his red-hot average to .341. Quite the change from last year! Hunter was 2-4 (.314) with a 2-bagger (15), and Martinez went 2-5 (.230) with a double as well (9) and 2 ribbies. Fielder was 2-4 (.275) with 3 runs scored. Miggy had a strange off-day, going 0-4 with 3 K's. Very very odd for him. It was a highly enjoyable squeaker of a game. Only, lose the hats. They look horrible. Next game: Pirates (31-20, 13-11 away) @ Tigers (29-20, 17-8 home), 7:08 Eastern. TV: FS-D. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Projected starters: Gomez (2-0, 2.75) vs Porcello (2-2, 6.28). |

Lynn Henning of the D-News has a nice run-down of the top 10 prospects in the farm system. Very much worth the read.
