Setting the market?
If I was ever, while acting as a free spending Steinbrenneresque owner, to overpay for a few free agents, does that ever set the market for other players and have a ripple effect on the league as a whole?

Insofar as you would be grabbing the best available and leaving the rest to fight over the scraps, I suppose you would. Not in the manner of setting a benchmark for future contracts though.

Thanks.
And, it was really the latter question that I was interested in. I know I will be inevitably be affecting the market by bidding on players I don't end up signing, thus raising the price for whoever I lose out to. But, I wanted to make sure that, if I do something dumb like overpay too much, I won't end up having a big effect on everyone else's contracts as a result. When I do start my league, I intend to have a no price is too high to go to sign Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez when they hit the free agent market. So, I just want to make sure that single minded obsession with them doesn't have any unintended consequences other than their consequences on my own budget. It would be kind of cool if the game did take that in account. Say, Barry Bonds signs for $30M a year, well now A-Rod wants that too. I know you don't particularly want that but, for me, it would be weird to be paying a guy $30M when the next highest guy signs for, say, $18M. Just my two cents.
