depends on how many divisions? I started my 16 team league with 4 divisions, so there is no way I would add a wildcard since 4 teams are already in the playoffs. Even if I had 2 divisions I wouldn't.

Also depends on what type of league you are referring to, major league - minor league - feeder (college)?

I think sometimes it comes down to whether having something adds to ones enjoyment of the game. In real life, I despise inter-league play. I simply hate it. But, when it comes to playing OOTP, I love it. Mainly, because it helps me to get to know the teams and players in the league I'm not managing in. If adding a wildcard adds to your enjoyment of the game I say go for it.

What David Watts said - it only depends on one thing, what you like and enjoy in your baseball world. Nothing you do in OOTP has to mirror real life in any way, shape, or form if you don't want it to.

I have one league with 12 teams. Top 2 in each division (2 div) make the play-offs. Maybe it seems far fetched or not realistic, but I do it because it suits my style of play and makes the game more enjoyable for me.

I also ran a 16 team league (2 sub-leagues) with 8 teams each. Top 4 in each league made the play-offs.

on ootp I have no problems with playoffs.

In real life I am a traditionalist. I prefer division or league winners to progress into playoffs or world series like how it used to be. This way you be assured of the best teams playing against eachother. case in point 1997 and 2003 marlins wild card teams. then 2006 Tigers another wild card team although they lost in the series.

wild card is a excuse for those who feel sorry for the teams that came close but didnt win division. In case nobody heard there is talk around the cooler among the GMs about discussing a more permanant system of more teams in playoffs. This adds $$$$.

I actually do not like too much playoffs. It introduces more randomness to the whole thing. I have faith in a 162 game schedule, or 154 which ever, to determining a league champion, and then having the two league champs play it out in a postseason series.

But, my league follows historical progression, so now I have divisional play, I have a 2nd round of post season, and I miss the good ole days.

Only the best team from that division. It may or may not be the best team in the league. Also, a balanced schedule used with divisions renders the divisions arbitrary and pointless (e.g. AL 1979-93 and NL 1993).

It's a necessity if you have three divisions and don't want a club to sit around idle with a bye during the playoffs.

It's professional sports. Money's been an integral part of it from the very first day an athlete was paid to play a given sport.
