why are guys who are rated 20 overall in the major leagues?

if a 20 something rating is poor why are there so many guys rated in the 20s in the majors? Can anybody explain the overall rating and potential overall rating please? pretty confused.

If you are using scouts, then those 20 something players may not actually be as the scout sees them......if you are playing without scouts, then there just must not be better players to be had.....

Just because a guy is a 20 something doesn't mean he can't play. It may mean he is only a "one or two tool" player. Good bat, can't field or run. Good glove, multiple positions, mediocre bat may have good value as a utility player. Don't get lost in the overall rating when you can still get value by having guys that specialize.

That is one of the things that I enjoy most about this game. If you keep your eyes open you can really make use of one-dimensional players.

Especially if you are playing the game out yourself.

I see OP's point. Considering I tend to use 2-8 ratings, if I saw a bunch of 20-something players, I'd know something was off.

(In all seriousness, your ratings scale matters. I'm going to assume you're using 0-100)

Look at your Free Agents. If there are a whole bunch rated higher than 20, and teams are still filling their rosters with 20-somethings, well then you might have an issue. I'm going to bet this isn't the case, however.

He's most likely using the default 20-80 scale...

Overalls will only go to 20-80, I think, not to 0-100. Still, the comments that 20-ish players can be useful major-leaguers is true. They're not likely to set the world on fire, but they can be useful guys to fill out your roster with.

what scale is that? That doesn't look like 20-80 to me. And wow, numbers instead of stars. Its like I am looking at a different game right there. I go with 2-8 and stars. Makes you look at stats a bit more.

It's 20-80 and I don't use stars because I don't like judging one star players, I have had 25 overall guys starting because they hit better then other guys at one time or another. I now use 1-10 scale for ratings because I'm staring over and want to make things harder. I find 20-80 gives you a chance to see what a player has cause I find starts make you prejudge.

I assume what OP is getting at is:
- a bad or low end major leaguer can be 20 OVR
- a raw 16 year old R ball player is also 20 OVR

I think he's asking why there's not more granularity between the OVR ratings (or possibly could be suggesting to add granularity)

I don't know if this is what the OP was getting at, but I kind of agree. I also use the 20/80 scale and cannot quickly guage where a player is at talent wise if he is only a 20 overall. I do think there is an easy solution though. There should be an option to toggle between evaluating players based on MLB and for evaluating based on their current league.

I know the game can do it becuase whenever you order a scouting report it gives you both ratings. It is not really practical to have to order scouting reports all the time to keep track of where these guys are rating within their current leagues. Even if you want to keep it as something that you only get when ordering a scouting report, it should at least be saved somewhere on the players profile where you can get back to it and use it to compare, so you don;t have to save all those scouting reports.

I would really love to be able to just switch to my AAA team and see the same view I see for the default view on my MLB team with all the ratings ranging from 80 down to 20 somethings. Right now when I look at my AAA team all players overall like like 20-21/80 with a couple 25-40 guys thrown in.
