How do historical rookies work?
I noticed there's no minor leagues in a historical season. So if I start in 1901 and sim until present day, how do rookies work?
I assume Ted Williams will make his debut in 1939 (as he did in real life) and be in the 1938 end of year draft class? What about someone like Derek Jeter? In real life he was drafted in '92, cup of coffee in '95, first full season in '96. So, when is he brought into the league? Is he in the draft after the '91 season? If he is and he sits in the reserve roster, will his skills increase as they did in real life (roughly, obviously) so he'll be ready to go in or around '96? Or will he be ready to go in '92? OR will he be draft in '96 ready to go?

I can, however, speak to my personal setup. I am playing in a historical league with no minor leagues and no amateur draft. This results in historical rookies appearing on my Reserve or Active Roster during the season in which they made their historical debuts. So, Ted Williams would appear on the Red Sox Roster in 1939, while Derek Jeter would appear on the Yankees Roster in 1995. If/how the player's skills increase also depend upon your setup. If you select "Recalc" in your league setup, then OOTP will take that player's historical performance (1-year, 3-year, or career are the options, I believe) and create ratings for that player based on those statistics. Essentially, this makes the player develop more (1-year) or moderately (3-year) closely to how they did historically. If you disable Recalc and enable Player Development, then the player will develop entirely according to OOTP's player development model, independently of his historical performance. I personally use Recalc *and* Player Development, which keeps basic historical abilities while allowing me to teach players different positions than they played historically. Others should be able to provide detail on how their particular league setups result in historical rookie appearances. |

Starting in 1901 I noticed there was an option for minors but I didn't want it. I don't want fictional players involved and I know I can prevent them from hitting the majors, but then there's no point in them being there, so reserve roster is fine for me. I just want to make sure players develop on there.
I also want a draft because I don't necessarily want players going where they went in real life. Let's say for example the late 80's, early 90's Yankees are doing really great. I don't want them to win the world series in '91 then get a top draft pick the next year. That being said, with the draft on when does Jeter get drafted? '92 or '95?

How is that? Is this new in 14? In previous version the only way you have minor league is if you add them yourself. i use the original PCL for my AAA for my 1871-2010 league and various other minor league teams from txranger and No Pepper uniform projects. I had to manually add those. Still on 13, I have simmed from 1871 to today and never have had minor league appear automatically.

Historical years that had affiliate teams have those teams attached IIRC, so if you played 2012 you would have the same setup as last years game with full minors

And my original question: with a draft, what year does Jeter get drafted?

I think someone created a database that brings rookies in prior to the MLB debut time, but I might be wrong. |

So then Jeter is drafted in November of '94, with cup of coffee ratings in '95, and (with recalc on) is ready to go in '96?

I dont think the minors auto evolve, i may be wrong on that though. And yes, If your draft is in Nov. He will appear in the 94 draft, you can play him in 95 but his ratings may not be good enough and then with recalc he should be starter quality in 96

I don't use it (don't play historical), but there is a database out there which brings in players in their professional debut year, instead of their big-league one. I forget the name though.

With the standard database, players enter the draft pool for the year in which they made their MLB debut and are rated based on the settings you chose for your league. If you're using 1-year recalc, the ratings will be based on their rookie year only. If you're using 3-year recalc, they will be based on a blend of their first two seasons (since there are no previous year stats, which is normally the first of the 3-year basis).
Minor leagues can be added automatically using the game creation wizard, but they will never be the real life affiliates. The minors have had too many changes in league structure, affiliation, and relocation for OOTP to handle. So you have to use fictional team names or edit them yourself. But DO NOT edit the minor league structures or you will have problems. Also, you can have minor leagues with ghost players, which will alow you to promote and demote your real life players while having invisible players round out the minors for simulation purposes. Otherwise, if you don't have minors, your league will be significantly unrealistic because there will be no minor league option years, waiver system, rule 5 draft, etc. This makes it too easy for teams to horde players on reserve and avoid the real life realities of personnel decisions.
