New OOTP Player looking for guidance

Luckily I managed to get OOTP 14 early, after the gf said I could buy it before payday at the end of the month. As stated in my previous thread (asking about a trial), I have played one or two OOTP games before, the last one being 11. However, I have never actually sat down and played this game in full detail (never even played a proper MLB game), normally I create a fictional league using football teams and just simulate the whole season.

This year though I want to change that and play the game to the fullest (as much as possible), because I am pretty much a new player, what is the best way to start? if I just want to control my MLB team? and not have to worry about the minors etc? Would I be better off just starting a New ML game, or setting a game up using custom settings?

I want to start off the game using the basics really, and then incorporate more responsibilities as I go on, to do that, would I need to start the game in Commissioner mode? or Commissioner and also act as GM only?

Thanks in advance

Read what I and others said in this recent thread for general advice.

More specific to your questions:
  • I would set up a small custom league and just observe as you sim a week at a time.
  • You only need to be Commissioner to do certain tasks that you will learn down the road. You don't need to be Commissioner to avoid being fired or to Play as GM.
  • Speaking of playing as GM, that would be the way to go when you do take over a team. Concentrate on the front office stuff and delegate team tasks to your manager.

Thanks, I've had a read through the link you provided and I'll follow your suggestions in here and ones from the other thread. Introducing new things as I go along will be the easiest learning curve, I'll start off simming and learning the basics that way, and bring more things in when I feel ready.
