Help - Please

I am new to iOOTP.
I have been coaching real kids, playing real baseball for 12 years.
I have wanted to play OOTP because I figure that like a player, the more reps I could get managing a game, the more I could learn.

I am looking for ways to build a winning team within this game.

My starters are 5 star pitchers, I set my lineup with contact and speed at the top, power in the middle, the best of what's left at the bottom. My defense puts players in their strongest positions by rating.

I can't win a game

My starters walk guys then give up home runs.
I tell them to pitch around tough batters and they give up doubles and triples. My offense is anemic. Contact hitters strike out. Power hitters ground out.

What am I missing?

Any help would be appreciated.

You may just be having a bad year, but....

5 star starters: real or potential? If the latter, they may be too young and in over their heads. They may also be tired. Do you have a 5 man rotation? You should. Also, try increasing the use of the bullpen with

Main menu -> Team -> Strategy -> Substitutions
Move PH for Pitchers more toward Frequent
Move Hook Starters more toward Quick.

There's a lot more to evaluating hitters than speed, contact and power, but I assume you know all that. Do your hitters have decent (9+) "Eye" ratings? They may all be prone to swinging at bad pitches!

Finally, try looking at everyone's morale. From your results, I'd expect a lot of angry players. Look past that to their expectations. You may find your cleanup hitter expects to be at the top of the lineup or your leadoff guy wants to be in the middle. You can't always accommodate them. But you need to shake things up.

You should also consider a trade for a consistent on base guy - good contact plus good eye and a track record of success that could stabilize the lineup at the 1 or 3 spots.

Without seeing all the numbers involved, that's the best I can offer. Feel free to post some player ratings.

I don't know how many games you have played in your season but your team could just be slumping. I have had my share of bad runs in my seasons and I am in one now. I went into the all star break 59-20 and in the 12 games I have played since I am 3-9, and that is against bottom of the division teams primarily. In one of the games where I was getting the bats going I hit into 5 double plays. Another I took a 5-0 lead into the 9th and gave up 6 runs. Sounds like you put together a decent team stick with it and it will turn around.
