Feeder League Players that aren't drafted
What happens to feeder league players that aren't drafted?
Let's say I want to have a staged independent minors, where 18 year olds start off in A ball. Major league teams draft from AAA, 3 rounds. AAA teams draft from AA, 5 rounds and AA teams draft from A ball, 7 rounds. Then A ball teams have an Amateur Draft from all of the new 18 year olds. The idea is that the best players will be promoted while the rest will still have careers with teams in leagues that are competing to win. Some players will need two years at a level before they are drafted up to the next level. I want players who go undrafted in feeder leagues to stay with their minor league team. Will this happen if I set them up as feeder leagues? Or will everyone be released and I'll have to start those rosters over each year? Major league players that are released (as they get older or stink) would also be free to sign in AAA, AAA released players could go to AA, etc. Finally, is there any way to get rid of the reserve list - I've found that the major league teams on AI just sign all of the free agents to fill their reserve lists, but I don't want that, and the lowest I find I can limit it to is 15 players. Yes, I think there is a solution to all of your problems and it is called a "minor league system".

No, that isn't. A minor league system is exactly not what I want.
I don't want minor leaguers to be affiliated with major league teams. I want minor league teams that are trying to win on their own. Basically what real baseball was before Branch Rickey destroyed the minor leagues. I don't want major league teams to have the option of signing young kids and then farming them out, I want players going to the majors once they are ready to be major leaguers. I want the minor league teams to get something for selling off their players that outgrow their level. I didn't mention it but, any minor league teams that have players drafted will receive extra money based on when those players are drafted. Relegation leagues only work when the minor league teams are independent and trying to win. Promoting a major league team's AAA affiliate obviously doesn't make any sense at all. I was just looking for a simple answer as to what happens to feeder league players that aren't drafted. Last edited by Scruff; 05-07-2013 at 04:08 PM. |

You have an unusual enough set-up that you will probably need to test it on your own. But undrafted players from college/high school feeder leagues, for example, simply become free agents.

Agreed, but actually there was a minor league draft at one point, though I'm not 100% familiar with the particulars of how it worked or when it was in place.
However, I don't trust the AI enough to make it work with the financial system, so I need a way to move the best players up automatically. Art does not always imitate life :-) It would be great if I could just set lower financials the lower down you go in the minors and have them sell their best young players off to the next level. But I don't see how the AI would do that competently. |

I don't think this setup is possible.
Feeder leagues are for major leagues. What you appear to want is feeder leagues for feeder leagues and feeder leagues to have drafts which I believe is not a viable setup. And as said players not drafted just become Free agents. |

You can set it up. The game does allow it . . . if you have 4 independent leagues, you can definitely set it up to have league 4 feed league 3 which feeds league 2 which feeds league 1. You can set the drafts up on different dates too. i.e. have League 1 draft December 1, League 2 draft December 8, league 3 draft December 15 and League 4 draft December 22, so each league knows which players were lost before its draft.
I know that college and HS feeder players that aren't drafted are released, but I haven't seen anything that says pro feeders are. Just figured someone might know for sure. |

The game allows it but unfortunately there is a key piece missing. Once the draft happens all undrafted players become free agents and do not return to their teams.
I have a setup like yours and I found out that after the draft all those players are free agents and all the lower level teams are empty and have to start from scratch. Its too bad. |

I'm no expert at all so I could be wrong and possibly misunderstanding.
But I'm fairly sure you can have a feeder league for any league even if its Japanese or Korean. So hypothetically if you erased the regular minor league set up and set up your minors as independent leagues (like you set up a Japanese league or Cuban whatever) couldn't you have a feeder league for all of them? This way, technically I think you'd just have 5 different leagues and then feeders that are not affiliated and would exist on their own. And if you wanted a connection you could possibly do it via League Asscoiation? Am I making any sense?

Feeders won't work, since all undrafted players get released and don't stay on their original team.....however, I have set up a league to do this in a little different way.....
First, because, with no minor league affiliate, a team MUST have a reserve roster (not good), every team must either have an affiliate or be one. So I have made the major league teams (24) each have one AAA affiliate. Then I have 3 independent AAA leagues (8 teams each), set up as INT (International) leagues. Each of these has a full system of minor league affilliates, AAA to Rookie ball. The Major League creates no players, but the AAA leagues have a 20 round draft every year of 17 year olds. The Majors then have a Minor League Draft every year where they select 5 players from the independent AAA teams. Only teams on the AAA rosters are eligible. Players in the Independent AAA leagues' minor league system are exempt. They way I do this, is to make a copy of my universe, load the copy up and release all the players on the Independent AAA teams' highest roster (INT level). Then run a free agent draft of 5 rounds with the Major League. Save the results and load up my original universe and move the draftees to their new teams manually. It is not a perfect simulation of the independent minors, by any means, but it is sufficiently different from the modern day setup to be an approximation and is a lot of fun. And it works great with playing stats only, since the players you are drafting have all spent a few years (mostly) in the minor leagues building up their statistical profile. Not sure what problem you are trying to solve......if it is the feeder leagues not working, it is not an issue of there not being enough players; it is that after a player reaches the draft age, he has no where left to play if he is not drafted.....feeders work for high school and college type leagues where players are booted out when they use up their eligibility.....
