This is why baseball (and OOTP) is awesome

It's still Spring Training, but the team I'm GM'ing (Illinois) just won 13-12 which is awesome enough. It had been a back-and-forth game and Arkansas loaded the bases in the 9th down 13-11 with 2 outs. Williams singled in a run and the game ended on a throw to the plate.

The player that made that throw was Erik Grand. He was playing CF here and was fighting for a spot on the bench as a 5th OF. There are just 4 games left in Spring Training and he's sporting a .125/.222/.188 slash line in 32 ABs. He's a fine defender at all three outfield spots and stood a good chance of making the team despite his woes at the plate.

He had just made a throwing error two batters eariler, that allowed the tying run to advance to 2nd. Then he came up big throwing that very same runner out at the plate...

...and injuring his shoulder on the play. He's expected to be out just 1-2 weeks with mild shoulder inflammation, but will miss the opening day roster for sure now.

When I think back on, say 15 years ago and the baseball simulation that I was playing at that time (High Heat? Which I thought was quite neat!), I shake my head in wonder at the realism and excitement that OOTPB provides in comparison.

Just wait another 15 years.

According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

I hear you. The first baseball game I played that tried to be kind of a sim instead of just arcade was Tony LaRussa Baseball II. I loved the heck out of that game for years, but OOTP makes it look terrible.

Fifteen years from now what we have today will seem very laughable to us.

First one I ever played was made by SI and I can not for the life of me remember the name. Earl Weaver was next and was awesome. Ran my first online league with FPS Baseball Pro. used it until I found OOTP, back in "I cant remember" but was a different name and I bought the cd in a store. God I hate getting older, memory goes soooo fast.

OOTP is the best by far and in 15 years, we will be on the holodeck playing with realistic holograms and instead of reading it, we will see it live in front of us.

My first was an 8-bit baseball game on the Atari 800. No names, no stats, just red team and yellow team. My best friend and I created teams, 25-man rosters, lineups, bullpens, etc and tracked basic counting stats on notebook paper. We did our own pbp as we played head to head.

OOTP is like a different universe.

As much as OOTP is awesome, there's still something to be said for keep stats in a notebook. I used to do it with fictional soccer leagues, before I knew much if anything about baseball. I've also done it for fictional football leagues.
