Controlling AI lineups
I am replaying 1980's seasons using historical transactions, which is a great feature, but results in simply the "reserve list" and eliminates the set of rules that involve roster movement (options, right to refuse reassignment to minors, etc.). This often results in some very a-historical lineups (I realize I could switch to historical lineups, but I simply don't like the idea of every month feeling like September, with such large rosters). The computer will often stick established players on the reserve list, sometimes even stars (such as Dave Parker for the 1986 Cincinnati Reds. Parker lead the NL in total bases that season) in favor of promoting some kid that had 40 at bats the whole season and isn't a prospect. Promoting the player myself and setting a lineup doesn't work; the computer quickly changes it back. Player strategy doesn't work either (forcing computer to start player at a position), because the computer will quickly dispatch the veteran in question back to the reserve list. The only way I've really gotten around this is to edit the reserves that I do not want active and give them phantom injuries. It often takes disabling several of them to get the computer to call up the guy I'm trying to get into the lineup, at which point the computer generally realizes that this guy has value, and makes him the starter at his position. I would like to avoid this, as well as having the ability to set historical lineups for the computer the way these guys batted in real life.

I second this. It especially drives me nuts when I see a clean up hitter leading off in a lineup, or like you said, established players sitting on the bench (or on the reserve list). I don't play with reserves, so I'm actually surprised to hear 'force start/use at position' doesn't already prevent the AI from placing players on reserves. It really should.
And similar to the way 'force start/use at position' works, it would be nice if we could also force hitters into a specific spot in the lineup, as well as 'force' players to play vs. lefties/righties (for platoons). |

Having the "force start at X position" actually work would help as well... |
