Hold Runner
In terms of OOTP baseball what does this actually mean?
In real life a runner is held on first base probably 85+ percent of the time. To get accurate play by play results should the human owner being holding runners this often? Ive never really understood this command and seldom use it because it really doesnt make sense in regards to what real life baseball is. They either hold the runner(85+ percent of the time) or if its someone really slow like Adam Dunn they likely wont pay much attention. Is the penalty great on here for holding runners? I think the option should be "Don't hold the runner" since that happens far less frequently. |

I don't understand it either, but I always do it when there is a runner who is a threat to run. I've always assumed it means the pitcher pays more attention to the runner than a normal hold?
I know my catcher throws out more runners when I use that option. |

Problem is I am looking for it to be fair. I want to know how often the computer AI is using and how often I should use it to get the stolen base percentages to be accurate. Seems if I use it the percentages are way down and when I dont they are too high. The thing is when I dont hold them the computer apparently isnt smart enough to take advantage so I dont feel the need to use it very often because they dont run as much as they should when I am not using it. It just seems goofy to me so I am hoping Markus will explain. What it means? How often the computer AI is using it? How we should approach to make sure we arent cheating the computer AI and also getting accurate realistic stolen base percentages and numbers? |

It's a little misleading. It does NOT mean that your first baseman holds the runner on instead of playing behind. It means that your pitcher will try to vary his delivery to throw off the timing of the base runner, employ a slide step, etc. It makes it less likely for a base stealer to get a good jump, but lowers your pitcher's effectiveness slightly.
