Substitution Quirks
I've run into this one a few times...a player gets injured, and I have to immediately name his replacement. In real life I wouldn't have to replace him until the next time he was supposed to appear, in other words, if my 2B makes the first out of the inning and gets hurt during the play, I could wait until the next half inning to name his replacement. Until then, the injured player still "holds" that spot.
Not really a big deal for position players, as my decision on a replacement really isn't likely to change based on what happens the rest of the inning...but it might. But for pitchers it's a different story. I just got done with a game where my reliever got hurt on the last pitch of the bottom of the 9th of a tie game. I had to pick a new pitcher before I could bat in the top of the 10th. I wanted to wait, because if I scored in the 10th I would bring in a closer, if not I'd bring in a middle man. Since I was forced to choose before I could bat, I chose my middle man, Bud Norris. Well I scored in the top of the 10th, so now I had to either bring in Pestano and lose Norris if the Astros scored, or stick with Norris. I wouldn't have had to make that call in real life, as I wouldn't have had to announce Norris as the new pitcher.
As a little post-script...Pestano slammed the door in the 10th, giving Bud Norris the W without throwing a pitch...annoying but kinda funny...
