What's your baseball world like?

I run a small 10 team league based in the US. No financials and I started in 1930 (currently in 1942). There is one level of minors I added after 5 years. I plan to keep expanding once a decade.

I also don't control the teams. I like to let the AI run them and just sort of watch.

I know this is totally embarrassing, but can someone show me how to take and post a screenshot? I am using Firefox if that matters.

I run a 12 team fictional league. Like Silvam14's it's also a spectator mode league.

You can visit mine by clicking the logo in my sig. Once there click on the 'About' link for more info.

Use the 'Print Screen' button on your keyboard.

Then open up an image editing program, MS Paint will do fine. Ctrl+P for Paste, and there you go.

My league is a continual struggle to understand what are and how to use WORLDS, QUICKSTARTS, TEMPLATES, DATEBASES and STATS. I am thoroughly frustrated with getting any where near where I would like to be. I must be the village idiot. I had been away since version 10 and bought OOTP13 last year. Loved the feel of the game, but never got it anywhere near what I see others doing here. Bought OOTP14 and I do like it, but it is like having a fancy car but not knowing how to drive. Can anyone help me?

My Baseball Worlds

I have concentrated on leagues with real-life players. I enjoy different settings/challenges so I have 4 leagues in progress:

[*]A league starting in 1901 that uses the random introduction feature. I am currently at the beginning of 1918 in this league. I enjoy seeing how players might perform in different eras and vs different opponents. I am (so far) hands-off with this league, generally following a team from each league through a season, "watching" a couple of games per league week, and tracking favorite players/leaders/standings throughout the year. Otherwise I would not have time to advance rapidly enough and still play other scenarios. Additionaly, I rather like the fact that no human interference is involved in how these random histories are evolving. Here is a link to the league's history: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ns-1901-a.html
[*]An Historical Pennant Race League. I GM/Manage a contender using real-life transactions/lineups. I just completed the 1959 season with the Dodgers and I was terrible, scoring a 0, so my work in this type of league needs must improvement. I have just started 1948, managing the 1948 Indians from my boyhood state of Ohio. My pace is ~ 1 season of this league for every 8 of the random introduction league
[*]My Willie Mays League. This is an historical league, starting in 1951, currently in March of 1954. The idea here is to manage my favorite palyer throughout his entire career - Willie Mays. I GM/manage Willie's Giants. In 1953, Willie was great, and the Giants led down to the 9th in Game 7 of the World Series but lost. Unlike my previous league, I scored 106 of 100, an OOTP God in this league for 1953. I have just increased trading from Average to Hard. I play ~ 1 1/2 seasons of this league for every season of the previous league.
[*]A 2013 MLB league, GM/managing the New York Yankees. I play this one as closely as I can by calendar day, i.e., I play the 4/24 game on 4/24. I chose the Yankees to see if I can outperform the real-life Yankees, particularly with the injury challenge they have this season. So far, so good.

From a game play point of view, the 3 leagues I actively manage, I am only involved at the Major League Level. I am usually involved in each game, often using the "play until RISP" feature depending on the situation. I will allow the AI to play to the end in runaway situations in either case.

I enjoy each challenge because they are different, and switching back and forth helps me not get in a rut with any one format.

Multi-league universe that combines real and fictional aspects. Played almost coincident with real calendar, so about to start the 2013 season.

Leagues include:
MLB - snapshot taken in 2006, plus real 2008-2012 rookies just imported to the free agent pool prior to 2013. League evolution turned on, and the Yankees moved to Indianapolis (yeah!!!).

Continental League - competing 3rd ML with 20 teams, three levels of minors. This was my original league that started on a Commodore 64 in 1988.

The real affiliated minors, mostly as existed in 2006.

Japanese Leagues with one level of minors. Mexican League. Taiwan League. Korean League. Chinese League.

Real indy leagues, populated with mostly fictional players: Atlantic League, Northern League, Can-Am League, Golden League, American Association, Frontier League.

Fictional indy leagues: Far North League, Timberline League, Portland (OR) Municipal League, Southern Maryland League.

Mexican, Venezulean, and Puerto Rican Winter Leagues.

Australian Claxon Shield, played as a winter-scheduled league

Greenland Winter Ice Baseball League, with modifiers designed to simulate pitching in -30 degree weather on frozen ponds or lakes and microscopic markets.

Smaller European leagues based on reality with fictional players: Bundesliga, Serie A, Hoofdklasse

Fictional 4-team Sao Tome Baseball Conglomeration, started as a short-season league, transitioned to a 240-game schedule last year with 2-man rotations.

I think that mostly covers it...

Fictional ALWAYS... does me no good to put in players I know from the real world, although I've been so out of touch with baseball the past few years, that nearly all real players are fictional to me now LOL.

In addition, people always get mad when real players don't perform like the real players. This illusion of cloning goes away with fictional players.
  • I create two leagues, each with four 4-team divisions for a total of 32 teams.
  • No abhorrent wildcards, all division winners qualify.
  • No abhorrent DH rule, pitchers bat.
  • No abhorrent Interleague play, what is the purpose of leagues then?
  • Weighted schedule -- play your division more than the rest of your league. 30 games against each division opponent, 6 against each of the rest of league for a 90/72 split.

I make the roster moves, etc and the play out the games 1 week at a time, stopping only when something requires my attention.

I also sim 20 years before I take over. Just about to take over my first season (2013) in OOTP14 (just bought yesterday), and first simmed 1993-2012 to build up history, records, etc. My team was pre-determined too, so I don't get to pick from the best or worst to take over, I take over the team I had chosen in advance.

In 20 years they went to the playoffs 3 times, including a 3 peat in 2000-2002. However they have never won it all. They did the final simmed season 2012 and had the best record in baseball with 102 wins but got swept in the first round (go Braves!)

I'm currently playing a 24 team, 2 division international league of "national teams" (players from the team's country only), with European teams and, well, actually two American teams, so it's not quite a league of only "national teams".

I like that and will have to adopt it for my next game.

Curious as to how you selected your team though?

I just started a 20 year sim and I decided to select the same team I was managing from my college league (template).

It will be cool to see their history when I take over.

I have an online league that I play and commish in, and I also have a semi-fictional league that I play in my "spare" time. I start with the MLB quickstart, default settings, except I turn on draft pick trading, turn injuries to the lowest setting, and turn off the 10/5 rule for veterans. I send all players to free agency and start an inaugural draft. I always take a young player first (Kershaw or Trout), then maybe Kimbrel, Stanton, or Harper if they're available. After that, I go strictly for prospects. The cheat with this is that the current year's crop of amateurs are available in the inaugural draft so I get to pick up a bunch of high end prospects without trading away anything. When I started this with 14, I got Machado, Profar, Appel, Gausman, Dylan Bundy, Zack Wheeler, etc., so I have a ridiculously stacked farm system. Once I finish the draft, I end up trading a few of those guys for players I wanted but missed out on in the draft and for players who may help out that season if I (or the AI) thinks my team might have a shot at making the playoffs. At some point during the season, usually around the All-Star Break, I'll reassess where the team is and trade away underachievers for high draft picks the next season. I'll also try to sign elite players to team-friendly extensions. In 13, I could get six and seven year deals done. But, in 14, the longest I have been able to do so far is four years, $38 million for Bryce Harper. And, once a players starts getting up in age (around 30), if they're not in the top 10 at their position, I will attempt to trade them for a high draft pick or two. It's very seldom that I keep a player around after they turn thirty. Anyway, I keep young talent flowing through my system plus I keep a competitive team on the major league diamonds. It's harder to make trades in 14, and I do find myself overpaying for players at times. But, I love the recoded system and I am finding it to be more of a challenge to stay on top.

I'm from Atlanta, GA, so I just picked the team that had Atlanta as its city, changed the nickname to something I prefer and that was it. There were no players yet assigned, it was in the early part of the league setup. I had NO input over anything for the team at all until 2013, I didn't even look at the rosters until it was my turn to take over.

Quick question that may deserve its own thread. How did you get this to work?

I haven't gotten too far into 14 yet due to RL crap, but I tried getting something like this (albeit on a slightly larger scale) going in 13, and every single time I ended up with teams having like 4 players on them, and their reserve rosters full of players that they couldn't put on their roster because they were foreign.

It was kind of frustrating, but I would like to try again with this version.

I actually did a league this year that I've wanted to do for a while now. I have 4 major league levels (MLB, AAA, AA, A, R) and two feeder leagues (College and High School) and I have about 161 schools between them, maybe more. It's been very cool but I have a few kinks I need to work out.

I'm actually still testing it right now because I screwed up some things, and the talent depletion with the feeder leagues, that was just fixed, affected my league as well...but overall it's very exciting to have a league that is really working the way I've wanted it to for so long.

I'm also planning on adding a Japanese League, Dominican, Mexican and Chinese leagues and doing an association between them but that'll probably be the next step in figuring out the world I want.

Anyways I just wanted to talk about my league because its very exciting to finally get it all together! It took a couple years so yeah, anyways that's my game world!

I am going to try something new this season. Start the MLB quickstart and let the computer run it until July 1. At that point jump into the season as a manager and see what I can do.

I will pick the Brewers and then decide how to play based on their record. Either firesale them if they are not in contention (Trade Ryan Braun anyone?? evil grin) or attempt to add some pieces to them to get to the playoffs if they are competitive.

Should be interesting. Part of the reason I want to play this way is I lack patience for the first half of the seaosn. I end up making a lot of early trades. This way I will have some data in place and will move quickly into the trading period.

Stay tuned for an update on how this works. Perhaps in the dynasty thread
