No Hitter in 11 Innings

Have not seen this one before. Not sure if this has happened in real life.

Bevens Brilliant -- Fires No-Hitter
Friday, August 1st, 1947

Bill Bevens was unhittable today as he beat the Dodgers 1-0. The Chicago pitcher breezed through the Brooklyn lineup and got himself a no-hitter. Bevens had them talking to themselves as he struck out 5 and issued 2 walks in an outstanding performance at Wrigley Field.

His catcher said to reporters after the game, "He started off slow. He didn't have command of anything in the first three innings, but lucked his way through them. The Dodgers really helped him out by not being patient... they hit a lot of first pitches. Then it all came together in the fourth. From there on, the Dodgers never had a chance. He dominated them."

To date this season, Bevens has registered 19 starts, 8-9 won-lost mark, 4.66 ERA, 141 IP, 53 strikeouts and 62 walks. Opposing teams have hit .242 against him.

Fun fact: Bill Bevens was one out away from no-hitting Brooklyn in the 1947 World Series, but walked two batters and gave up a walk-off double. Same pitcher, same opponent, same year, but different result.

Twice in one month.

No-Hit Masterpiece by Borowy
Friday, August 22nd, 1947

In a dominant outing, Hank Borowy of Cincinnati totally silenced the bats of the Brooklyn Dodgers. In the 3-0 victory he faced only 29 batters, surrendered no hits, had 4 strikeouts and no walks.

"I'll be very honest with you," his manager said. "I didn't know the situation was what it was until the seventh inning. I happened to look up there to see how many hits we had. Then I happened to notice that they didn't have any hits."

Commenting on his defeat, the losing manager told reporters in the clubhouse how he saw the game, "Well, it was pretty simple today, the Reds had all the hits and all the runs. And Borowy pitched a heck of a ballgame."

In season stats Borowy shows a 13-13 record in 27 games, 194.2 innings, 77 strikeouts and a 4.62 ERA.

My two top pitchers Warren Spahn and Ken Raffensberger started off hot. Spahn (7-0) and Raffensberger (9-0). At that point we were 29-9 on May 24th. Then it went down from there. 8-21 record in June, followed by 11-17 in July. We did bounce back in August, 16-14. The team is not bad, have some good guys, Jackie Robinson and Nellie Fox are the rookies. Have Joe Garagiola, Hank Greenberg, and Mel Ott (Doing bad) and Jim Tabor leads in hitting .351 in 64 games. This off season will be fun.

Never 11 innings, but three times there have been 10 inning No-Hitters.

August 19, 1965 Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs Box Score and Play by Play - Baseball-Reference.com
(Game 1) - Jim Maloney of the Reds pitched a 10 Inning No-Hitter against the Cubs. Coincidentally, the winning team (the Reds in this case) had 1 run on 9 hits just like in your game. Amazingly, Maloney allowed 10 walks. Twice the Cubs had the bases loaded, once from 3 walks, and once from a HBP and 2 walks. In game 2 of the double header, the Cubs got a hit from their very first batter.

May 2, 1917 Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs Box Score and Play by Play - Baseball-Reference.com
Fred Toney of the Reds pitched a 10 Inning No-Hitter against the Cubs. Funny that two of the instances were Reds over the Cubs. The Reds only managed to get 2 hits themselves, one of them being the game winning RBI by Jim Thorpe, possibly the greatest all around athlete of all-time.

July 12, 1997 Houston Astros at Pittsburgh Pirates Box Score and Play by Play - Baseball-Reference.com
Francisco Cordova pitched 9 innings and Ricardo Rincon pitched 1 inning for the Pirates in a combined No-Hitter over the Astros. The Pirates won on a walkoff pinch hit 3-run HR by Mark Smith.

I have to mention my dad's favorite pitcher Harvey Haddix:
Haddix will always be remembered for taking a perfect game into the 13th inning against the Milwaukee Braves on May 26, 1959. Haddix retired 36 consecutive batters in 12 innings essentially relying on two pitches: fastball and slider.[2][3] However, his Pittsburgh teammates didn't score, as Braves pitcher Lew Burdette was also pitching a shutout.[1]
A fielding error by Don Hoak ended the perfect game in the bottom of the 13th, with the leadoff batter for Milwaukee, Félix Mantilla, being safe at first base. Mantilla later advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Eddie Mathews, which was followed by an intentional walk to Hank Aaron. Joe Adcock then hit an apparent home run, ending the no-hitter and the game. However, in the confusion, Aaron left the basepaths and was passed by Adcock for the second out and the Braves won 2-0. Eventually the hit was changed from a home run to a double by a ruling from National League president Warren Giles; only Mantilla's run counted, for a score of 1-0, but the Pirates and Haddix still lost.[1][4][5]
“ I could have put a cup on either corner of the plate and hit it. ”
—Harvey Haddix[1]
Haddix's 12 and 2/3-inning, one-hit complete game, against the team that had just represented the NL in the previous two World Series, is considered by many to be the best pitching performance in major league history.[1][6] Mazeroski later said of Haddix's dominance in the game, "Usually you have one or two great or spectacular defensive plays in these no-hitters. Not that night. It was the easiest game I ever played in."[1]

I remember Haddix's game well and there was a lot of talk about its being the greatest game ever. A lot of people thought Haddix got shorted because he didn't get the win but here we are 50 years later still talking about it. When you lose a game like that its another reason to remember it. Harvey Haddix, he was about as tough as Whitey Ford. If you were starting a team and had to choose between them it might come down to astrological sign or something.

Here is the Retrosheet box score and play-by-play results of that game.

Haddix pitched all 12.2 innings for Pittsburgh; Burdette pitched all 13 innings for Milwaukee.

LGO I tried several diffrent sites, BBref, Baseball almanac, Wikipedia, to try to find out how many pitches Haddix threw and for that matter Burdette.
