Truly Independent Leagues?
So does this finally exist in 14?

What do you mean by truly independent? Isn't one of the problems currently that all leagues have their own free agents pools?

Do you mean indy leagues who interact with affiliated leagues mainly by selling players? And maybe with fairly strict limits on lengths of contracts?
Those are the main weaknesses with indy league implementation as I see it. I've had multiple indy leagues in my universe for years, and they sign free agents from the overall pool, they trade with other leagues when it's allowed in the setup, they mostly have small budgets (some downright microscopic), and in general they work well. If you ignore those first two things, that is. I do have cases where a guy will sign a 3-, 4-, 5-year deal with a team that's paying him $1500 a year. And you never have transactions where, say, the Blue Jays buy an indy league team's best pitcher for $50,000, as you do in real life.

For what it's worth, I had a PM exchange with Markus about this. I sent him some links to indy leagues like the Can-Am and American associations, as well as sent him those leagues roster rules.
He told me he put it on the list! A little late for 14 but down the road... Point is, he's aware of it. Some one should take him and crew to a CAN-AM league game when they visit the NYC this May... real baseball experience, affordable prices. |

In the past I've suggested that there should be an option permitting only minor league contracts for independent leagues. If that were possible, I think it would fix some of the oddities independent leagues currently create in the game.

limiting contract lengths has been something I wanted in this game going back to 2006. That would be a real nice feature, real nice.

Think adding the ability to set a max contract length (believe we already have average contract length) would help. for indys, set it to max of 1 year. And yes, would echo the desire to enable contract buyouts. That's all that's really missing for me to mimic independent leagues. I've already set finances really low for them so it's rare I find ML stars signing with an Indy team.

Yes, I am aware of this issue. And every year I want to make it happen, and every year time was too short
So, please keep bugging me about it, some day I'll fix the problems with indy leagues...

I would think limiting the length of contracts would require some serious recoding of the AI.

Every year I harass Markus about this; understandably so he always seems to not know what I'm talking about, so it's nice to see his previous comment.
Bottom-line: independent leagues in a loose context are currently possible, with creativity and imagination for sure. Truly independent leagues in the technical sense are probably a handful of versions away. Whenever I play OOTP, I typically do so in a colossal and convoluted universe and only play within the indie leagues and occassionally international leagues. I've had a great time thus far with my WOB 13 universe; a lot of players that end up in the indies are college scabs or orphaned affiliated ball prospects, with the occassional cup of coffee MLB'er. |
