Why is this guy rated 80/80?

Not a great hitter, either by ratings or history, not a great fielder....?

If you switch over to ratings stars, is he 5 stars/5 stars?

Yes - 5 stars both for potential and actual.

And both speed and stealing scores are average.

Rates lower than Pedroia, which makes absolutely no sense relative to actual performance, and not much sense relative to batting/fielding ratings either....

Overall ratings and stars are highly positional in nature. MLB is going through a bit of a dry patch with 2B at the moment.

Compared to other 2B he is near the top. Age may also play a factor in the rating. At 26 he is also at his zenith for a middle IF.

He was also a top 30 prospect in 2010 and 2011 so that may be the basis for the ratings and they may be expecting him to have a breakout year.
The people who put the ratings together rely on Pecota projections to make an educated guess as to future performance.

Afterall, playing with current rosters means you are asking the simulation to project this current season.

The 9 point higher rating for eye probably pushes him over the top in terms of his overall rating...just judging by what I see on your screencaps. Pedroia's defense is stellar but Kipnis' is very good...the difference in rating there is 17 but once you get into the upper-levels, such a difference is probably fairly marginal.

As far as why a guy like him as such high ratings to begin with, I think rudel's post has that covered. I think we are all quite thrilled there will (soon) be an ability to edit players so we can make our own adjustments to the rosters!

Lots of adjustments were made to the rosters since this build was submitted to Apple. The opening day update should make things even out better. Kipnis, I know, was adjusted.
