Spring Training Depth Charts
Had a thought last night:
For spring training, instead of the traditional depth chart...chart...a system should be implemented for subbing out players after X amount of at bats or innings pitched. Unless done manually I never see fringe players getting enough at bats / innings to evaluate them in spring training and there isn't really enough room in the depth charts to properly assign them playing time. It would be nice to implement this right into the seven day lineups, therefore it only has to be done four times and each week you can give the probable major league lineup more playing time. Obviously too late for 14 but something that sounds easy enough to add. Thoughts? Also, how does everyone else handle spring training playing time? Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Start all your prospects and backups using 7-day lineups and the AI will sub them out in the 4th or 5th inning with regulars. Check your lineup page ST stats to make sure certain players get the AB to show what they need. Starting pitchers typically get pulled after 4 innings by the AI so that doesn't take much effort on your part. I try to get at least 7 SP with starts in ST. For that you will have to slot them in manually. Hope this helps.

Never thought of starting the backups. That's a good idea

I also like to go with a 6 man rotation in ST.

For ST I use the two above suggestions: Start Backups and 6 man rotation.
The other thing I will do occasionally is if have a player I just don't want to play for a period of time, like a starting position player or a key relief pitcher, I go to the 'set game strategy' for the player and 'bench player for X days' to force him to not play for a period of time. I also do this when a player is injured DtD and at something less than 100%. |

I do this as well as platoon two or three guys I want to look at. If I have a backup whose ratings are close to or better than my last year's starter, then I will have the backup start every second game. And if I have a prospect at the same position, I will start him every third game to get all of my players somewhat equal playing time

I always do this as well. I also use the spot start at about 50 if I have some cusp guys or relievers I want to see a start or two from.

I don't find it realistic at all to have starters coming in as subs during Spring Training, so I use the bench player for X days feature to sit most of my starters for road games in Spring Training. This keeps them from playing entirely and allows the backups to get more at bats than they normally would, and it's also realistic since starters often don't travel for road games until late in Spring Training. Then I use the 7-day lineups to determine which backups/platoon guys get the start.
It's somewhat tedious to do that every single day, but I'm so used to it that it's gotten pretty easy to spread out the at bats and innings during Spring Training. Plus, I trust my own decisions with these moves more than I would trust the AI if we had more depth chart options. |
