I like to use it to "highlight" the league's worst everyday player. I award it to the lowest OPS of batter's who have enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title.

It's kind of fun to do, and it also helps keep track of the whacky things the AI will do with other team's players.

I once had a SS who "won" it 4 times in his career, but he had 10+ gold gloves in his career. Reminiscent of Ozzie Smith before he started to hit.

I have used 3 different ones before.

Breakout Player of the Year
Comeback Player of the Year
Most Popular Player Award

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to have as many of these as you want?...

For a while it was for the batting champion, so i can track the leading hitter over history easily

now though i have called it The Next Best Award
the hitter award for me is the MVP (must be a hitter)
the pitcher award is the Cy Young (must be a starter)
the rookie is now what i call Silver Slugger (best non MVP hitter)
so now the next best can be the second best pitcher, can be a reliever or the third best hitter

gives a better overlay over history that the best players in a league over time will wind up with a few trophies
but like others here a few more custom awards would be nice- maybe 3 would be perfect to give variety but not bog the game down with 100 award choices

I also use it to highlight relievers. In this way, I don't have a true "MVP" award, but rather I pick out the best hitter, starter, and reliever in each league.

would be cool to have something that saves the "voting".

I love to see the top 3 at each award, but it goes away and is not saved anywhere as far as I can tell.

I never thought of using the rookie of the year award as something else, since a pitcher or hitter can win that.

Might change that to the Relief pitcher of the year or most improved...
Most ROY players are eventually busts anyway

As far as tracking votes, I am not sure but you may be able to produce some sort of report for it.

I really wish some of these were programmed into the game so that the AI could pick it each year. The custom award sucks because if you simulate a couple seasons there obviously won't be one selected.

OOTP, please do something with this!

This is a pretty cool thread. I honestly never used the custom award feature. I may have to now lol.

I assume a custom award has to be manually chosen right? IE the game won't pick a winner if you even for some reason forget to assign a winner right

Not only does it not assign a winner, if you don't select before the other awards are announced I haven't figured out how to get the option screen.

I named mine the "Diamond Thief Award." A tad cheesy, but I like it for the stolen base leaders.
