End-of-Spring Training Review and Deliberation: The Pitchers
Starters
Mario Vargas – 3-0, 4 GS, 16.0 IP, 2.25 ERA, .228 OAVG, 1.00 WHIP, 13 H, 3 BB, 29 K Mario looked like an ace all spring. He’d be our opening-day starter if it weren’t for the issue of the suspension. So he’ll start the season riding the pines, and will pitch the 11th game of the season. Pete Williams – 2-0, 4 GS, 16.0 IP, 2.25 ERA, .219 OAVG, 1.06 WHIP, 14 H, 1 HR 3 BB, 15 K Pete also looked like an ace. He’ll be the first-ever opening-day starter for the San Diego Sunshine. Lionel Tournier – 0-0, 4 GS, 16.0 IP, 6.75 ERA, .266 OAVG, 1.38 WHIP, 17 H, 3 HR, 5 BB, 13 K Lionel didn’t look great in the spring, but still keeps his spot in the rotation behind Pete. Willie Rottschaefer – 3-1, 4 GS, 16.0 IP, 5.62 ERA, .297 OAVG, 1.25 WHIP, 19 H, 4 HR, 1 BB, 12 K Willie looked great except for his final start, which was awful. He’ll start the third game of the season. William Taylor – 2-0, 4 GS, 15.0 IP, 4.80 ERA, .271 OAVG, 1.60 WHIP, 16 H, 3 HR, 8 BB, 16 K We’re surprised by the strikeouts. A decent spring. Willie will start the season as our number-four starter. Either he of Matt Peacock will drop out of the rotation when Mario is activated. Aurelio Macias – 2-0, 4 GS, 15.0 IP, 6.60 ERA, .271 OAVG, 1.47 WHIP 16 H, 3 HR, 6 BB, 16 K Aurelio would have made the rotation regardless of some troubles, but he’s on the shelf for four months, so that point is kind of moot. Matt Peacock – 0-0, 11 G, 10.1 IP, 1.74 ERA, .167 OAVG, 1.06 WHIP, 6 H, 5 BB, 6 K Matt pitched well enough to earn himself a start or two while Mario is suspended. Whether he keeps the job or not will depend on how he and William perform in their opportunities. Relievers Carlos Velez – 1-0, 11 G, 10.1 IP, 0.00 ERA, .243 OAVG, 1.06 WHIP, 9 H, 2 BB, 5 K Carlos had a great spring – there’s no way we can’t take a pitcher who didn’t give up an earned run all month with us for the opening day roster, though he did give up three unearned. He earns a middle relief slot. Jose Marin – 1-1, 2 SV, 11 G, 10.1 IP, 0.87 ERA, .205 OAVG, 0.77 WHIP, 8 H, 8 K Marin gave up one run all spring, period. He didn’t walk anybody. He gets the second right-handed middle-relief spot. Sam Gilbert – 1-0, 11 G, 10.1 IP, 1.74 ERA, .121 OAVG, 0.97 WHIP, 4 H, 1 HR, 6 BB, 8 K Sam looked a lot better than we expected him to look. He’ll serve as lefty setup man. Toshikazu Yamauchi – 1-0, 11 G, 10.1 IP, 6.10 ERA, .279 OAVG, 1.45 WHIP, 12 H, 5 HR, 3 BB, 13 K Not a great spring for Toshikazu, but he keeps the righty setup man spot due to his past and his reputation. Keisuke Ando – 0-0, 11 G, 10.1 IP, 1.74 ERA, .206 OAVG, 0.87 WHIP, 7 H, 2 BB, 5 K On the back of a great spring, Keisuke earns the lefty middle relief position in the ‘pen. Serge Legrand – 0-0, 5 SV, 10 G, 10.0 IP, 1.80 ERA, .147 OAVG, 1.00 WHIP, 5 H, 5 BB, 10 K Serge is our closer, as expected. Alberto Chavez – 0-0, 1 SV, 9 G, 10.0 IP, 2.70 ERA, .222 OAVG, 0.90 WHIP, 8 H, 1 BB, 4 K It’s cruel, but Alberto is the odd man out in the middle relief corps. We’ll be watching very closely in AAA, and if there are injuries, or if Peacock or Taylor really don’t impress, he could be called back up quickly. Jose Encarnacion – 1-0, 11 G, 10.2 IP, 4.22 ERA, .225 OAVG, 1.50 WHIP, 9 H 1 HR, 7 BB, 14 K Too many walks, but otherwise a pretty good spring. Will need to work on his control in the minors. David Middleton – 1-0, 10 G, 10.1 IP, 4.35 ERA, .300 OAVG, 1.45 WHIP, 12 H, 1 HR, 3 BB, 9 K David was a favorite for the bullpen, but didn’t perform as expected. He’ll start the spring in the minors. Luis Morales – 1-1, 10 G, 10.1 IP, 5.23 ERA, .250 OAVG, 1.26 WHIP, 10 H, 1 HR, 3 BB, 13 K There was a lot to like about Luis’ spring, and a lot not to like. He starts the year in the minors, but we’ll keep a close eye on him. Xavier Torrez – 2-0, 11 G, 10.1 IP, 6.97 ERA, .349 OAVG, 1.74 WHIP, 15 H, 3 HR, 3 BB, 8 K Xavier still has a lot of work to do. He’s ticketed for the minors. |

End-of-Spring Training Review and Deliberation: The Hitters
Most of our decisions have been made for us due to injuries and an already-thin lineup of hitters.
Catchers Rajil Mirajkar -- .473/.508/.764, 26 H, 3 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 7 BB, 10 K, 18 R, 20 RBI A monster spring. Rajil is our opening-day catcher, batting cleanup. Lucas Lansdale -- .259/.375/.315, 14 H, 1 HR, 10 BB, 5 K, 8 R, 9 RBI We’re still waiting on his diagnosis. If he’s healthy, he’ll probably stick with the big club as a switch-hitting pinch hitter and third-string catcher until one of Xie-Li Lou comes back from injury. Otherwise, is the odd man out and will start in the minors. Fernando Marquez -- .254/.299/.458, 15 H, 3 2B, 3 HR, 3 BB, 10 K, 6 R, 19 RBI, 1 SB Fernando impressed, and showed enough to warrant keeping him on the bench rather than handing him back to Seattle. He looks like he’ll be a capable backup to Rajil. Infielders Gustavo Soto -- .625/.625/.875, 5 H, 2 2B, 1 K, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 SB Starts the year on the disabled list. Will be a bench infielder once he’s ready to go, in about seven weeks’ time. But with both he and Dalton Gaines as infield waiver claims, what happens when Gaines returns from injury? Sid Lang -- .190/.273/.259, 11 H, 4 2B, 6 BB, 4 K, 6 R, 3 RBI Sid wasn’t horrible, being press into a big-league position. And if Lansdale is on the DL, he will actually start the year with the big club as a utility infielder, although he’s unlikely to get many at-bats. Don Bell -- .357/.446/.500, 20 H, 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 7 BB, 9 K, 13 R, 11 RBI, 4 SB Don had a fantastic spring. His abilities combined with his defensive flexibility mean he’s likely to find lots of playing time at a lot of positions. Edwin Ross – .293/.388/.414, 17 H, 1 2B, 2 HR, 9 BB, 3 K, 13 R, 13 RBI Edwin impressed in the spring. He’ll be the opening-day shortstop and will bat seventh. Iemitsu Nakamura -- .339/.415/.518, 19 H, 4 2B, 2 HR, 8 BB, 7 K, 15 R, 12 RBI, 3 SB After a slow start, had a great second half of the spring. Opening day third baseman, batting sixth. Carlos Rocha -- .296/.433/.500, 16 H, 3 2B, 4 3B, 13 BB, 6 K, 12 R, 1 RBI, 7 SB, 2 CS About what we expected from Carlos. He’s opening day second baseman, batting second. Raul Gonzalez -- .400/.422/.667, 24 H, 4 2B, 4 HR, 2 BB, 7 K, 12 R, 18 RBI A great spring for Raul. He’s opening day first baseman, batting third. Outfielders Xie-Li Lou -- .268/.333/.439, 11 H, 1 2B, 2 HR, 4 BB, 9 K, 9 R, 7 RBI, 5 SB, 1 CS On the shelf for two months or so with a strained hamstring, will likely start in center once he’s recovered, and will probably push Don Munroe back to the minors for the time being. Baldassare Tarquini -- .421/.492/.895, 24 H, 6 2B, 7 HR, 6 BB, 12 K, 24 R, 20 RBI, 2 SB A monster spring. Baldassare will be opening day left fielder, batting fifth. Juan Navarro -- .393/.462/.589, 22 H, 8 2B, 1 HR, 8 BB, 8 K, 12 R, 18 RBI, 5 SB, 1 CS Another monster spring. It’s still between Juan and Jesus Lopez as to who will be opening day right fielder. Whoever it is will bat eighth. Jesus Lopez -- .280/.446/.360, 14 H, 4 2B, 15 BB, 12 K, 13 R, 10 RBI About what we expected on the spring. Still in the running for opening day right field position, but if our opposing starter is a righty, the job will probably go to Juan. Clark Johnson -- .288/.415/.346, 15 H, 3 2B, 12 BB, 10 K, 12 R, 5 RBI, 10 SB, 3 CS About par for the course. Clark will be opening day center fielder, leading off. Will probably settle into right field once Xie-Li is back from injury. Don Munroe -- .293/.359/.397, 17 H, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 6 BB, 11 K, 9 R, 7 RBI, 10 SB An impressive spring, Don opened a lot of eyes, especially with the ten swiped without being caught. Wil open the season as a bench outfielder, but is likely to lose his spot on the 25-man roster once Xie-Li is ready to go. In the meantime, will likely see some pinch-hitting and pinch-running duty. |
