Trouble Winning it All

I have just reached and then lost the World Series for the 12th time in 20 years over two different solo leagues. 8 times with the Blue Jays and 4 times with the Red Sox I have lost in the World Series. Been in 9 game sevens during that span and am 0-18 in games where I can win a World Championship. And, needless to say, I am now actually getting pissed at my computer as though it's beating me.

My teams are usually the best in the regular season but I have yet to win a Championship. I've been up 3-0 in the Series twice and then lost the next four games both times. Has anyone else found it is hard to win it all or do I just have the worst luck around with this thing?

One word: Atlanta.

Seriously, I've had lots of bad luck in the playoffs as well, particularly when I sim it out, but I've also gone on New Yorkesque tears where I seemingly can't be stopped once the postseason comes around. Hang in there, and try to ignore the floating spectre of Babe Ruth over your shoulder.

Been there. Read my thread a couple pages back about being sick of the AI coming back.

But ever since then I've started managing my games, rather than simming through, and I've won back to back World Series now. It does get frustrating, especially when you take a huge lead in the series but then blow it.

I typically fall apart in the World Series as well.

I dunno guys. I've been to 3 series winning two ( back to back), playing a few out and simming here and there. Keep juggling those line ups, EVERY GAME. Just don't rely on what gotcha there. Find a few intangibles, but don't let it getcha down.

i have had it happen about 4 or 5 times. I have the best overall record in MLB. Best pitching staff. And only one or two position players are decent..all of the rest are all star caliber players.

One thing that is often over looked is that in the regular season you play "each team" in your league the good AND the bad. You also face alot of players of poor calibre pitching during that time as well. In the playoffs, teams go with their "best 3" in their rotations and you are facing ONLY the best teams.

Records, etc are thrown out of the window.....who wins the playoffs? Who get hot at the right time.

Well, if you would have said you lost 8 times with Atlanta and 4 times with Boston, there would have been an easy explanation....those teams just don't win the World Series.

Seriously though, I have had my rough times as well in my solo league. My managerial record is now 1316-1067 (.552), but my career playoff record is 21-28 (.429). I should just change my name to Bobby Cox. I constantly pick last or second to last in the following year's amatuer draft, so my team is tough in the regular season. But once the playoffs hit, my lineup all goes cold...I can't buy a hit. I have played 14 seasons in my current league and made the playoffs 11 times. Only once have I even made it to the Series. I have got knocked out at least 3 times in the first round after being up 2 games to 0, and the same thing happens in the 2nd round. The one time I did make it to the Series, I lost in game 7. But Steve is right when he says you are facing the best teams and their best pitchers in the playoffs.

Maybe it is just me, but this keeps me coming back to play the game. I don't want to win every year, I would get bored too quick and quit playing the game altogether. One of these years, I will win it all.

lol

great book!

there is a boring study in Curve Ball that, without Lewis's more *colorful* langauge, shows the 'luck' inherent in a sample size of 5/7 games

Moral of the story: Don't finish first overall in the league

The two years that I blew 3-1 series leads in the WS, I came into the playoffs with the best record overall.

The next three seasons, I "three-peated", winning it all three years in a row, but I didn't have the best record in the league in any of those seasons.

I just finished playing another season, finished with a personal best 115-47 regular season record, tops BY FAR in the league, but got swept in the WS by the Cubs (102-60). Although this one was misleading a bit. My closer got injured in game 1 of the ALCS and was out for 5 weeks, missing the WS (my bullpen blew 2 leads in the WS which could have turned the series around).

I just finished a season today. I had the second best record, texas is the only team that beat me. And they beat me in the WS 4-1. But the previous two seasons i had the best record and didn't even make it past the second round. I guess.....i'm going to have to wait. Maybe when my kid comes onto my team i will win the WS> He is 16 now with amazing baseball skills....i just hope he doesn't go to college so i can get him whens hes 18

Funny, only years I win are the years where I do have the best record in the league.

Not to start another one of those discussions that seems like gas is just being thrown on a fire (trade AI, for example), but just out of curiosity, what difficulty level is everyone playing at that is experiencing such difficulty in winning it all? I am playing at the Hall of Fame level and have had lots of trouble in the postseason like I mentioned in my earlier post.
