Rest for position players

What is the consensus on resting position players? Is it ok to set the lineup to rest whenever the starter is tired, or is that detrimental to the team? Is it better to give position players a rest every ten games or so or is there no adverse affects to the when starter is tired setting? I am a relative newbie to the game so any insight is welcome and greatly appreciated.

I think it is better to have the bench play frequently to avoid rust. The first part of your question (starter rest) depends upon where you have fatigue set and how good your trainer is at recovering fatigue.

It partly depends on your injury settings. If you're using Low or Normal injury settings, then sometimes using a Tired starter might not be so bad, but if you're using High/Realistic, then I wouldn't recommend it too often as there's too much risk of injury. Injury risk, not risk of performance decline, is my biggest concern when it comes to tired players.

Unless you're simming long periods at a time, it's also helpful to check your schedule. There will be off days during the season and sometimes the AI wants to rest a tired player 1 or 2 days before a team off day. On those occasions, I personally sometimes make the change to manually start a tired player, as they'll be able to rest soon anyway.

The above doesn't apply to catchers, who definitely do need rest.

When a player has a backup set to "If Starter Tired", the AI will play the backup as soon as the starter is less than 100% -- even if still at 99%. With that setting, a player who would be an everyday starter IRL gets about the same PAs has he would IRL. Presumably that includes the same risk of injury, but that risk doesn't seem to hinder teams IRL.

When you see the AI using something other than "If Starter Tired" on its own depth charts, it's because the AI considers the backup to be as good or nearly as good as the starter. The objective is to get PAs for both players so you get a build up in stats -- and therefore more info on which to judge them.

IMHO, there is nothing negative about doing what the AI does. OTOH, people who like to closely manage their teams -- including choosing exactly which games a player misses in order to rest up -- have the ability to do that.
