Velocity/Pitches

Do these really work?

I heard having higher velocity helps a pitcher develop faster, but I'm not sure if that's true. And if a pitcher has two pitches or six pitches...does it really make a difference?

I have this pitcher:
http://elitesim.ho8.com/Sim%20League/p711.html

But I'm not so sure if I should add another pitch to his arsenal, I don't know if it will help him or not.

And with this pitcher:
http://elitesim.ho8.com/Sim%20League/p2321.html

Would it really make a difference if I made his velocity better or not?

Just curious, thanks a lot.

Pitches don't matter, except knuckleballs.

Velocity might help players develop faster, but no studies have proven that. In any case, the effect is minor.

So,if I were to spend points in this league to add a pitch I should add a knuckeball over say...splitter?

Just curious, but what effect does it add? Will it be throw 100 MPH, lol? Or is it just the coding in OOTP that makes the pitch very, very effective.

My understanding is that velocity and pitch type is just window dressing for the Play-By-Play and has no actual impact on the game. If this is not true I would like to know and see any studies that were done. Would certainly impact how I played the game if these items did make a difference.

Can you teach someone a new pitch? I don't remember that functionality in-game. I guess you mean some sort of a rewards system in your league.

What effect? I dunno, I think it has some sort of an effect on BABIP. A search of the forums might be a good place to start because I don't remember all that well.

As I alluded to before, the effect is pretty negligible.

I swear a while back I read a post from Markus stating that an increase in velocity for a pitcher (ie, adding points to it in spring training) can possibly produce talent boosts down the road, though I'm sure I also remember him stating that the chance is minimal.

Hmm so pretty much this is the conclusion: the faster you throw may make a difference, but a small one if anything, the pitches you throw makes a small difference, but not a large one.

I see, thanks a lot. Do you feel groundball pct. makes a difference towards stats?

I used to think groundball pct was a cosmetic stat, but learned it was not. There's one owner in my league who plays in Coors Field and he LOVES to stack his rotation with high groundball guys to try to negate the homer effect.

Groundball % has no effect on homeruns.

It does, however, have an effect on where outs are made. If you have a good defensive infield, having a good groundball % would be an advantage.

To clarify: There is no difference between a fastball and a curveball. Heck, a pitcher can throw only changeups and be effective as long as he has good ratings.

Yeah, velocity has no in-game effect, but potentially helps slightly encourage development. I don't look at it ever in player evaluation.

Pitch selection has no effect, except for the hinting that Markus coded lower BABIP for those who throw a knuckler. I've never seen a study that supports this statement though.

sfgiants is right on GB% only affecting where outs happen, not HRs allowed.

I see, I see. Well, I feel like such a noob coming to these boards. I have 9 WS in like...31 or so seasons in OOTP leagues, but I want that percentage to improve. I've lost far too many WS as well and I wanna get that # up.

Thanks a lot, anything else that I should know? I mean, deep down stuff, stuff people won't notice.

Heh.... wow... that league has some ridiculous ratings. Somehow BABIP is .340 and many, many people have ratings over 100 for contact, and there's more than 100 5* prospects.

The $140 million payroll probably helps win some world series rings too Not to take anything away of course, it looks like everyone in the league has the ability to make lots of money, just no one seems to be able to spend it (except Arizona, trading for all kinds of overpaid vets)

Anyway, things you should know... well, there's always more to know, its all about asking the right questions

Actually, the year my team won the WS was with the $83,970,654 payroll.

As for ratings, it's really all the same. We have a lot of players with high ratings, some leagues have a lot of players with low ratings.

And it's early in the year, people will slow down.

BABIP is only .310 I think.

Maybe, definitely different leagues have ratings all over the place, I just get worried about the game and development engines when ratings are well over 100. I wonder if contracts get assigned right when even the best pitchers are 4* (no one 4.5* or better, the game AI won't demand $16 mil, although some people signed those contracts anyway).

BABIP is around .340 right now, I'm curious if that's what the league settings are at, or if the wacky ratings are just pushing things that way.

Either way, everyone's playing in the same league, but some of the assumptions I make about the game may not apply the same in that league.

For example, I trade anyone Minimal loyalty who is pushing 4.5*, especially at low offense positions like 2B or SS, because the increase in salary demands for not that much more production is pretty harmful. But, with no cap, that's not much of a concern, and it takes an exceptional talent to be 4.5* in your league, Gourriel is huge and only 3*.

Horde Loyal guys, thats the easy way to go. Always get prospects with fielding because that rarely changes more than 10 points over the life of a player, but talent jumps can happen pretty often and in bunches. Lose players who have low eye and high eye talent at age 25, they'll never fulfill it and someone will always trade for them like they will. Movement and Stuff are the two most important ratings in every league I've seen, and pick Movement over any other rating if you can only have one be strong.

I do too, I got stuck with Nuno during the offseason actually in a trade, with the minimal loyalty.

I know you'll say "wow, look at that contact!" But for some crazy reason it just keeps going up...and up...and up, it has raised during every sim this season, it's crazy.

In my experience playing OOTP 8 for several years, velocity is not a key factor. But it seems most SPs need at least an 87-89 MPH to have a good chance of success. If it's anything below that most SPs and RPs are real long shots. BTW, it's useful to track a pitcher's velocity over the course of a season and over several years. If it repeatedly drops he's probably losing his mojo.
