Great news! I've found the first edition of the Barrow's, the world's oldest baseball yearbook, in near (this is the key word) pristine condition.
![]() I hope to get my hands on later editions of this famous baseball bible. Here's a picture of the cover. ![]() ![]() Please forgive my poor artistic talent (I'm rather new to Gimp)

The next update will be a wrap-up of the 1872 season.
But for now, a few pages from the 1872 Barrow's year in baseball. An in-depth look at none other than the Chicago Black Sox. ![]()

Thank you.
Please start writing your own dynasty. It's reading the other ones that gave me the desire to write one myself. If your avatar is any indication, it'll be interesting for sure. I'll admit that it pains me to find the odd typo or error right after posting a reply. I must be more careful. I can't blame the 19th century editors for every single mistake I make.

Yeah, there are some great writers on here. Many of them have given me the desire to try my own dynasty. Yours has given me some ideas to imitate, especially the old time graphics you use and the stories that go with them.
As for my avatar, I'm from western Pennsylvania, but the Pirates won't have much to do with my dynasty. It is more of a semi-pro/town ball type league. I am working on writing the preliminary posts with league and team information.

I'm looking forward to reading it.
In the meantime, let's start the 1872 wrap-up with the Saratoga Division. Straight from the Barrow's. ![]() Next the Lexington Division |

![]() Looking for material to write about baseball is great because there's always something new, but seemingly forgotten, that pops up every now and then. Case in point, a reader sent me letters that his great grandfather (baseball player for the Buffalo Stampede) wrote to his wife in the early 1870s. ![]() I've therefore decided to mostly use this new material to tell the tale of the upcoming 1873 season. Stay tuned. But before that, we'll have a look at the major awards next, as promised. |

It's really interesting how you're doing this. This is definitely one that I look for when I login to the forums each day!

Thank you. It's a nice compliment.
I'm having a lot of fun doing this. But I need to find the time to keep playing the game. Anyway, the Stanford and Huntington Medal winners are... Well, that's in the Barrow's, of course.

When I announced that we would be following the 1873 season through letters written by Buffalo player Ryan Gilmer, little did I know that in 1934 Ackerman & Lewis - publishers of the Barrow's and specialists of all things baseball - had published "On the Road: A Collection of Letters from Ball Players" which presented over 200 letters in a commented edition.
As it turns out, most of Ryan Gilmer's letters in my possession were published in that very book. Therefore, to make things easy for me (and save me some valuable time), I've decided to simply present some of those letters with their original comments from 1934.
