Predictability?
I tend to stick to the old timers in the sport, but I'm wondering if any of you have tried predicting fight results using Title Bout and the fighters of today as created on this board. If so, what is your success rate? Remember untruths can lead to sudden enkindling of your lower garments....

I can't believe that no one here has tried using Title Bout to try predicting live fights. You guys using 2.5 have access to most of the top boxers in the sport thanks to Ice Tea and others. I used to do it years ago, but Now I have very few modern boxers. When 2.6 comes out I may try again.

I've done fights that were coming up before, but I don't really remember what the results were. Usually, it was me having 30 or so minutes to kill and just wanting to run a fight, so I wasn't too serious about it.

Well, that's something anyway. I recall years ago a handful of guys on this forum or elsewhere I think were running upcoming fights on Title Fight Championship Boxing, the first PC version of the board game. Seems to me there was a big heavyweight fight coming up and I ran it with whatever game we had at the time and the result, a stoppage, was bang on, even to the round.

I use to run up-coming fights (100 simulated fights between the two) and the results were pretty darn good. Even usually decent at predicting DEC or KO -
I know the Trunzo brothers on their website use to have each month a list of fights and what Title Fight prediction was. The record spoke for itself. Pretty damn solid. |

The only one I can remember doing is Mike Tyson vs Danny Williams, a few hours before that fight. In my TBCB fight it was Williams by KO in the 5th or 6th round. I think the actual result was Williams by KO in the 4th.
I was impressed. But I rarely use TBCB to try to predict real-world fights. Big fights are not usually on regular cable, and PPV is so expensive. So, I rarely see major fights and therefore don't pay much attention to them until after the fact. YouTube is the only way I ever see most of the elite fighters. Boxing has to be one of the few sports where you can't see the main stars unless you pay a lot of money. I just can't afford to do that. Not every month. Not even every other month.

I respectfully disagree about coverage, and the state of boxing.
If you saw Larry Merchant's interview as he leaves broadcasting he said (Not in these exact words), there were more bouts on the air then ever before in 2012, and although no longer main stream people are watching it, and people are making money in the sport. Showtime, and HBO had record years broadcasting the Sport. CBS, and NBC both broadcast bouts, and we had the first live fight on free tv in over 15 years (Leo Santa Cruz) You can find almost any bout live via some sort of a web stream if you have a high speed Internet connection. Wealthtv is new in the game and had some great fights and it costs $10 for the entire year. It's out there you just have to look to find it sometimes. I personally felt like I had access to so much boxing this year... More then ever before, and I saw GREAT fights, and great match up's. People complain about the one match up that is not made (Mayweather vs. Pac) but other then that the best seem to be fighting the best. I think the future of the sport re-established itself in 2012. |

There is certainly more boxing on TV than just a few years back, but I don't have HBO or Showtime. Our cable bill is high enough as it is.
I'm happy that the NBC sports channel sometimes shows boxing, but I'm disappointed that ESPN's Friday Night Fights doesn't broadcast year-round. Having to look to find boxing--therein lies the problem. I'm not familiar with web streaming and just have not been willing to devote the time and energy to find out about it. Too much going on in life.

We had fights on free TV in Dec on both CBS & NBC, how many years do we have to go back since that happened? The #'s did well too from what I saw. Yeah, it helps to have both HBO & Showtime but I'm very happy with the interest in the sport now. It's a niche sport but it appears to be a strong & loyal one. |

I've seen two live cards from Canadian venues on TV this year, almost unheard of. Most of the big fights I've seen though were after-the-fact on good ol' Youtube! I was trying to see live ones via the weeb, but it seemed like for each one I had to download some company's software and I've become very leery of doing that with all the electronically transmitted diseases going around.
One of the problems these days is that most of the interesting fights are taking place in Europe with non-US fighters and American broadcasters are just not interested, which explains their preoccupation with NFL, NBA, baseball, etc. I think they believe their audience wants to watch sports dominated by US athletes. To a lesser extent, that attitude prevails here in Canada too, but because of the smaller potential audience here, there are budget constraints as well. More and more major sporting events will end up on PPV in the future. But there's nothing stopping you from looking up scheduled bouts on Boxrec.com and then playing them out on Title Bout. Cap

Maybe I'm just too old and cranky to even try to keep up with what's available on the web. I'm at the point where if someone posts a link to a site I don't already know well, I'm out of luck because I'm not going to click on it. My nieces and nephews are always sending me links, and I have to tell them "sorry." I don't open emails from people I don't know, or ones that have generic titles that are not specifically directed toward me. Quote:
I used to check Boxrec from time to time, but there seemed to be so many pop-ups I gave up on it. How is it these days? With what Hamed and Jackyle have said in this thread, it is probably just my imagination that boxing is in decline. It just seems that every time I turn on the TV, some channel is showing MMA. Boxing seems to be on sometimes for a couple of days, then not at all for a while. Maybe my perception would be different if I had HBO. But I'm one of those people who remembers when there were 3-5 channels, and TV was free. I still resent the idea of paying for television, when so little of what is on these days is programming that I want to watch. I rarely play TBCB these days. Ironically, I recently bought another company's MMA management game and have enjoyed it so much that it has inspired me to return to my TBCB fictional universe for the first time in nearly 6 months. I hope new versions of TBCB with new features will someday arrive.
