Digital music inside OOTP

Today listening for some awesome sports-related music, I realized the idea to include the "OOTP Music" feature.

What's this?

It might be a place to store some MP3s music (or any free audio format like OGG if any licensing complaints appears) to be played in OOTP. For default, at every OOTP copy (starting with 14th version) it shall have some baseball music standards. Examples:

(The following examples shall be applied only for North American-based universes, like the MLB simulations)
* Take Me Out To The Ballgame (the most obvious example. Maybe an organ downtempo rendition of the waltzy, de facto "ball anthem's" chorus might be the intro theme every time the machine completes OOTP starting, and an uptempo version at 7th-inning stretches)
* The Star-Spangled Banner (I suggest play this before any game involving American-based teams)
* O Canada (idem, but for Canadian teams)

If a World Baseball Classic-like module is released, I'd suggest adding the national anthems of at least every "excellent-quality" baseball nation, for game purposes. And the rest of the anthems shall be downloadable from any OOTP based or sponsored server.

I'd like for the customers (us) customize the music player, adding songs to cater to different in-game moments, teams, eras (it might be unrealistic to hear "We Are The Champions" in a pre-1977 environment), etc. Imagine OOTP playing Van Halen's "Jump" during your ballgame's development. Or any Latin pop tune at the Winter Leagues or (if implemented) the Caribbean Series.

Or if desired, you can make the weird decision of hearing (for example) Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" instead of Mariah's "Hero" after your beloved team lost the pennant race or any playoff series.

I don't ask for more default-packaged songs due to possible licensing constraints by Markus & Co. But I feel this (based on another videogames' experiences, even at the sport sim realm) shall be a customer-gaining feature, without any concerns about licensing fees.

I like this idea a lot, especially if we are given the option to add in our own music from our hard drives! And have different songs as walk-up themes for different ballplayers.

I've been working on it for the past 3 years folks.. Markus has agreed that it's doable, but needs further discussion and that's the problem. There's not been enough free time for discussion. I'll try again and see what happens.

I like the idea except that it would get real repetitive after awhile. Remember Magic Carpet Ride from Triple Play 2003?

What I usually do is go to aolradio.com and listen to either meditation or ambient.

For this reason I spoke about "customizing the music player". Even I'd like to put some love songs in my OOTP.

In reference to My talks with Markus,..they've been private. As for open discussion, they would be in our Beta Testing forum. I honestly can't remember if there's been any discussion in the Public forums, but if there has, you'd need to search to find it. Sorry.

Although I make a playlist on iTunes for whichever team I am playing as, I would like to have it easier to edit wav files for walkup and for HR. Yes I want Old Comiskey Bill Veeck Fireworks.

When it comes to menu music I am totally opposed to this idea unless there is an option to turn it off. I despise crap-music. Especially crap music from an indy company. I prefer there to be none, nada, zilch.

I do not want to have to listen to someone else's idea of good music. I do not want, yet another, thing to have to customize (i.e. fix). There is nothing worse than hearing the same crap over and over and over and over and over again.

I prefer to listen to meditation or classical music when I play (which I stream) and not some crappy drivel with lyrics.

------------------

As far as in-game, I am already sick and tired of the current 3 crowd sounds. Ugggh. I sure hope that if someone is going to add sounds to the game please focus your attention to the in-game sounds as they are horribbly deficient. There needs to be a lot more variety than there is currently.

I am sick and tired of hearing "stroke me" from Pat Benitar during every single rally. I am sick and tired of hearing that one guy in my right ear that always yells something to the effect of, "aw come on, blah blah blah strike that guy out" after the home team makes an out. That sound file needs to be sheet-canned.

If you are going to add more crowd sounds please take out the ones that are easily identifiable from all the others. The sounds should not have unique identifiers otherwise they get real old real fast.

Get rid of all crowd sounds (no matter how cute you think they are, at first) that have one voice rising above the rest.

1. Option to turn off (prefer no menu music--I have my own already)
2. Lots of variety
3. Crowd sounds should be generic.

Finally, there are a lot more important things to be working on such as AI roster management, increasing play-by-play variety, and the financial model that take much higher priority than this that a lot of people despise anyway.

EDIT: I do not want to have to listen to the Star Spangled Banner in its entirety every single game. If this is on the table please take it off. I love this song! Please do not destroy it for me by playing it ad nauseum. Moreover, it would be an insult to a spanish-speaking player from another country who feels that some American-born OOTP player is being treated with more respect than he is--better have every single national anthem on file...even Zambia's. As far as making people go download their home anthem themselves: There is a question every single day around here about someone asking about how to do the simpliest thing around here. What may seem simple to me and you is entirely unmanageable to many. Most folks do not have the first clue how to do these things. It only seems that way because the diehards around here are the same people that post the most and the same ones that know how to do these things. Why punish a non-savy tech user from Zimbabwe that doesn't know how to replace the American National anthem?

It is best to avoid religion and politics in the game. If the national anthem is a neccesity please do not make me listen to it unitl the 3rd inning. Just use the last verse or last couple of notes or have it terminate function after my very first click to start play-by-play.

I am opposed to this idea. Please do not add announcers. The last thing I want to listen to every single time is repetitive drivel. There is no way they get this right. It will be the same 3 calls over and over and over and over again. I am the GM at the park not a fan at home. No announcers please.

Let's fix AI roster management, first.

Just in case you weren't aware, you can already have your own music/sounds play when a batter comes to the plate. You simply need to save a pre-recorded audio file in the .wav format as player_name.wav

So if you have a player named Jack Smith and you want a clip of the intro to "Welcome to the Jungle" to play when he comes to bat, you would save the file as jack_smith.wav and place it in the 'sounds' folder. (By the way, this does not work for pitchers coming into the game, only batters coming to bat.)

Be sure to keep it relatively short, though, as it will play in real time. (In other words, depending on how fast you have the PbP set to display, the clip may continue to play way into the at-bat. So try to limit the clip to no more than about 7-8 seconds.

Also note that unless the clip is recorded at a high volume and quality level, it may get drowned out by the game's ambient sounds.

And here's another idea for those of you who aren't necessarily interested in walk-up music...

Try recording yourself announcing players coming to the plate. Write a simple script for yourself to read, something like, "Now batting for the Mustangs, number 21, shortstop Joe Jones!" (You can alternately leave the team and position out, just in case the player gets traded or changes position.) I just use the basic Sound Recorder on Windows and add in an echo effect.

Now try playing out a game. Set it to play without pausing between plays and let it go. You don't necessarily even have to stay in the room to know basically what's going on. If you're the home team and you hear the crowd cheering wildly after one of your players is announced, you'll know something exciting just happened and can check in to see what all the fuss is about!

Pretty neat stuff.

(But for the record, I have been supporting Bigrod's efforts to get more audio options into future versions of OOTP and will continue to do so. The walk-up music/PA announcer feature is just a nifty little feature that few people know about and I wanted to share it with all of you. Hopefully, it'll help pass the time until more sound functionality is added to OOTP! )

I have heard something about this "niche" feature (I don't remembered this till you mentioned)

Question: Is it possible to have various WAV files for the same hitter, with one of these randomly selected? (e.g. jack_smith_1.wav or jack_smith_2.wav using the above-stated example)

About this, I propose the ability for change/erase the files, for example the Honorable Pawn example about the American anthem.

Even for Take Me Out to the Ballgame.

I have playlists of the years I play. So for the twenties that would be Jazz, Dixieland, Gershwin and Al Jolson For the fifties Elvis and other rock and roll heroes..for the 70's lots of great rock songs: Led Zeppelin, Stones, Moody Blues and of course Motown.

Love how it improves the immersion of the decades i'm playing and it's great to learn a thing or two about popular music history as a bonus ..

Unfortunately, I don't believe so. However, I would certainly like to see this option and will be sure to mention it to Markus if I get the chance.

First off..you do know there's an option to turn off sound right?
Secondly..you can edit and use your own sounds already if you know how. The problem is, it's extremely limited and doesn't need to be that way. It's just a few simple changes that acutally take less time to implement than sending an email or replying to a post in the forum.
One example of this is to allow the game to recognize the "play or play sound" command in the pbp. Do that and I could give you full audio play by play in a month or 2.
Third. kindly reread your post and think of those of us who enjoy the sounds of a baseball game.
Fourth. I can assure you that no new sound files will be added. That increases the size of the game and we don't want that. If changes are/can be made, they will be totally user customizable and optional and when I ask for /suggest something, I think of everyone not just myself.
Please don't take offense my friend, just some food for thought.
