24/06/13 – BAL 6, MIA 3: Rich Wilson homered and got 3-hits in his first game back. Montoya and Motsuzuki also went deep on a productive day for the offense. Wiggins did enough to earn the win (6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K)

25/06/13 – BAL 2, MIA 1: Waylon Gallagher’s 2-run homer in the 7th inning was all the offense we needed behind a strong Powlett performance (6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K)

26/06/13 – BAL 5, MIA 6: Peterson wasn’t very good (5.1 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 HR) but Edgar Thomas’ pinch hit double actually gave us the lead heading into the bottom of the 9th. Unfortunately, our new closer Stephane Thomas couldn’t hold on to it. Doyle Scott’s 2-RBI triple won the game for the Hurricanes to prevent a sweep.

27/06/13 – OFF

28/05/13 – BAL 1, ATL 4: The offense disappeared again in this one, managing just 1 hit until the 9th inning. Bruce Davis was decent (8.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 7 K) but it wasn’t enough on this day.

29/06/13 – BAL 0, ATL 3: Wiggins came close to a shutout (8.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) but was pulled after 109 pitches as the game was still close. Stephane Thomas came in for the save.

30/06/13 – BAL 8, ATL 6: Powlett was shaky yet again (7.0 IP, 11 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) but the offense had a fantastic 15-hit day. Motsuzuki had 4 of them, including a game tying 3-run homer in the 7th inning. Thomas got his NL-leading 26th save of the season.

Not – Dusty Brown: 2-16, .125/.222/.188, 1 RBI; Manny Montoya: 3-20, .150/.227/.300, 1 HR, 2 RBI

Reflections

Finally a winning week! Beating the Hurricanes closed the gap in the NL East, but I’m still very unlikely to catch them. We are just 1 game behind the 44-37 Philadelphia Quakers for the wild card spot though! The Cyclones have gone 2-8 in their last 10 games to fall to 45-39, just 0.5 games ahead of us. The wild card spot is very attainable if we continue to play well. After the 6-games next week, there will be a short break for the All-Star game. Potential All-Stars on my roster include Guy Peterson and new acquisition Stephane Thomas.
I signed veteran SP Raymond Dixon (R, 38, 3.5/3.5) to shore up my rotation after the departure of Martinez. Dixon will slot in as the #5 starter after Davis and Wiggins have been moved up in the order. Dixon has a career 172-167 record and 3.71 ERA between 3 teams but is in the twilight of his career. He had a 7-15 record and 4.28 ERA in 26 starts with the Boston Badgers last season but his 3.91 FIP was decent. I felt he was the best candidate on the free agent market and signed him to a $1,000,000 contract that will be pro-rated for the rest of the season. According to Karl Wilson, Dixon doesn’t have good stuff but is a wily veteran who relies on control and movement to be effective. I don’t need him to be great but hopefully he can still be a serviceable starter in the PLB.
Dusty Brown has been awful both offensively and defensively since coming over from Chicago. They are paying for his salary, but his sub-replacement level performance will not do. Prospect Shinzo Ojima is the backup now after Durango was dealt and could well take over should Brown continue to struggle through the All-Star break.
Santar is off to a very good start here in Baltimore. I know it’s been less than 2 weeks since his arrival, but he may well already be the best hitter on our roster.
