GM Mode

I play in GM mode with Coaches turned on. I like to sim chunks of the season and count on my manager to adjust lineups, rotations, etc. In my current league, I wrapped up the top seed with 2 weeks to play, yet my manager had my top 2 starters pitch in Games 160 and 161 of the season so neither was rested to start game 1 of the playoffs.

If the manager is assigned to determine my lineups and rotations, shouldn't he have rested my top 2 starters?

We got swept 0-3, in part because of this.

Do I have to stop the sim around game 160 and adjust this myself? I would really rather not.

The AI isn't smart enough to realize when such things would be beneficial. One of the advantages a human has over the AI. Look at it this way, the other team was playing by the same rules, so to speak.

Use bench player for X days. It works fine for ST to balance playing time and is ideal in the last two weeks of the reg season when you want to set up your rotation.

I would definitely be irritated if the same thing happened on my team. I agree that the AI is just not smart enough to manage as a human would.

On the other hand, perhaps the manager was trying to win as many games as possible during the regular season. Aiming for the best record is not a ridiculous goal. If that were the aim, the best pitchers would be used despite having clinched a playoff spot and jeopardizing the best starting rotation for the playoffs. Not really anything you'd probably see in real life, but not really an extremely horrible AI mistake.

It would be nice if the AI could be taught to avoid such "mistakes".

I hate it when the AI bats a pitcher and then replaces him before the very next half inning begins. Now that is a stupid AI move.

Thanks for the replies. I found the best work around is to just reset all player fatigue prior to playoff game 1. This way all teams are on even ground.
