Pay to participate in online leagues ?
In one of the leagues I am in, we (owners) are being asked to pay $10.00 each to help cover web hosting expenses for the league. Is this common practice ? I have been in tons of leagues over the last 10 years and have not found this to be the case but wanted to get a sense of whats happening in the OOTP online league community.

It's not uncommon, but typically I've seen call for donations. They can get spendy.

I've been in online leagues all the way back to OOTP 4 and not once have I've been asked or solicited to pay anything.

Been playing in online leagues for 8 years and never been asked to pay to play, however I have been in leagues were there's been a donate button if GM's wanted to help with costs but an actual commish asking me to pay not come across that one.

A one-time $10 payment doesn't seem like a lot to ask, at least to me. If it was yearly, I'd wonder about it. You can host a pretty good website for less than $50 a year, especially with all the discounts GoDaddy offers.

Getting a web site has never been expensive. It's all the bandwidth used when uploading/downloading files that costs $$$.
I've been in leagues where the donate button was always present, and I donated every year because of the costs above and beyond the web site. |

With AllSimBaseball the hosting costs are only about $85 per year. But if your league also runs vBulletin, that adds an additional $250 cost to the league.
More than anything else, it's the time involved for Commish's. I don't find the costs that big of a deal, my time is MUCH more valuable! |
