Lockout options
Just curious if there is some sort of system to accomodate the lockout. Now obviously the NHL is the biggest and most popular league so it makes sense that by default the season would go on as normal, however perhaps it would be possible to 'suspend' the league for a season and lockout contracts could be activated and perhaps it be possible to bring in an NHLer. There could be options for the NHL seasons e.g. no start date or a start date with a shortened season or even random and let the game decide. Having an NHL season on though with many of the top players still in Europe would really effect the dynamic and balance of the league and effect future drafts etc. If I were to play with NHL on for season 12/13 then I imagine there would be no lockout contracts but would be handy to suspend the league at the user's discretion obviously with so many options that could work the schedule. If there was a lockout in effect it would be cool if players were more likely to play in their home town or nation or a league or team they played with before and the occasional strange one like Drew Miller playing in Scotland etc and player friends, relations team mates a bit more likely to join them. Agents seem to be a big part of some players going to Europe and for some players they just want the insurance covered which is still a lot of money but not compared to their actual NHL wage. Agents I think would be handy in the game and is definetly a big part in minor league north american players coming to Europe.
Not a big issue and really not essential for the first version of the game, just wondered what the position is currently on this? Sorry if this has already been covered I didn't notice it if it has. |

So you want to buy a game that allows you to not play the game

I don't follow hockey anymore but I want to buy FHM to support OOTPD. Something like this may cause me to re-evaluate that support.

I'm all for realism, but there are some aspects of simulating the "real-life" NHL that should not be in any video game, and this is one very good example.

I can see why somebody may want to simulate the lock-out in the game. It would be interesting to be coaching European teams with NHL players on the rosters. However, we just don't know how long the lock-out is going to last. We may well see a half season of the NHL yet.
Is it worth simulating in game? In my view, probably not. This rubbish happens only once every eight/ten years (or so seems to be the case given recent history). It's probably not worth trying to code something like this when there are so many other things that could be included with the first release of the game.

I remember during the first version of NHL EHM, during the beta testing, we made a lockout DB and tried it for a while. It was pretty cool actually.

Not expecting any of this in huge detail especially season 1. Ideally there would be options to let people play as they would like. Though if realism is a factor taking out NHL players from teams in Europe/North American minors may totally change the balance of some of these teams and leagues (maybe not quite at the moment but more and more big players are making moves). NHL is big league and I myself will play it some of the time. Much will depend on licenses I guess if there were to be an NHL licence (can't imagine EA sports having Malkin at his Russian team in any official updates). Though I have been considering the DB in eastside terms perhaps if highly editable then there could be versions where users just take out or add certain leagues. Would have been cool to try and tempt an NHLer over to Edinburgh Capitals
Not a major issue and I guess a lockout DB could be for one year challenges rather than a career game, though would be cool to be able to sign your own rather than just the ones that have came over. As I said I do think by default the NHL should be active and that is the main thing, if there was a way that wasn't too time and resource consuming then would be cool to have a lockout mode (a bit like how there is a historical mode) Wonder how the previous stoppages would be reflected. This ain't a make or break issue at all for me more out of curiousity as hadn't seen the lockout discussed so wanted to provoke some debate. Though what I said about agents (with or without lockouts) is right enough for players coming to Europe and also networking e.g. former team mate/line mate/friend in ECHL went to play in Austria so may make it more likely that a certain player goes there or less likely if their aquitance had a bad experience. So a lot of selling the team to the player beyond just wages (though money has a big say), for guys that have played college hockey the opportunity to finish their studies and language are other factors in Europe. So former and current players are useful networking tools to reach signing targets. |

I wouldn't expect it but it would be very cool and open things up for new opportunities like archi said being a GM in europe and signing these guys.
I know it would be a feature i'd use. Simply put though i'm more than happy just to change the schedule length for the first version and like a younger me pretend that is what's happening in my game world.
