Getting Started Again -- Advice on an Idea

I finally took advantage of this weekend's special and picked up OOTP 13 (even knowing as I do that 14 is coming in just a few months). It's been a long time since I've played OOTP so everything old is new again.

There's this one project I've done with another sim that I'm wondering how would work with OOTP. The basic idea is that I would take charge of the New York Mets throughout their history, build a team essentially from scratch (because there isn't a lot of build with on the '62 Mets!) through draft, trades and free agency, and see whether I can build a champion and keep on running at a high level. OF course that would mean playing several seasons in succession, living through some bad years, and being in a firing-proof situation. And I haven't finished a single season in OOTP yet, much less multiples with one team.

Is this something that really works with OOTP or was it really built with other things in mind?

I think so. You start with an historical game in 1962 and take control of the Mets. The key thing is to pay attention to the historical options shown below. If you want to go through the heartache (and triumph) of Mets history to see if you can do better (or worse), then you want to have the settings like this, perhaps:

Hmmm. Re-reading your post, maybe you want a bit more flexibility rather than adhering to historical transactions so closely. So, maybe you deselect Use Real Historical Transactions and Retire Players / Players Miss Seasons According to History. I think you still would want Automatically Import Historical Rookies on, however, since I think you want to have the same historical pool of players to work with, only YOU will do better at drafting, trading, and free agent signing, I'm sure!

I think this is more on. I want to be able to draft, trade and sign free agents. I'm hoping that the wealth of the New York market (that I sadly have to share with the Yankees if that matters) will enable me to attract top players to the Mets and that I can trade for some of the best players while they're still prospects. The last time I tried that, in a different sim, I got the Mets to a championship in 1968, a year ahead of schedule.

I played forward to 2007 (the current year at that time) and while I was a powerhouse throughout the late 90s and early 00s never won another title.

And it looks like I'm starting over. I don't know what happens when the interface causes me to trade a player I did not want to trade instead of the player I was seeking to.

Well, did you leave that historical transactions option on? OR, less likely but still possible, are you actually not in control of the team as its GM? Even less likely but, if you are the GM, did you neglect to take control of trades in your team controls, thereby leaving your AI manager still in charge of this?

No, what happened was an errant mouse click led me to trade the wrong pitcher (Jay Hook instead of Roger Craig).

Put yourself in Commish mode and reverse the trade...meaning trade Craig for Hook.
