Two Weeks in May

May 14th L 5-6
Blow a 5-1 lead heading to 6th. Both Wood's give it up in 7th, Kerry takes the loss (first L/BS). Kuo gets another 2 outs (K) in 4 pitches. JD Drew hits 3rd HR already, Soto has two doubles.

May 15th W 4-2
Come right back for split vs Cards, Soriano 0-5 six LOB but a two out DeJesus double in 10th plates winner, Castro then plated him. Wells and Russell blew one run lead in 8th, Wood pitched 7th Kuo must have been tired. Marmol goes two and gets first win (1-3)

16th W 3-2
Win in 13 at home vs phillies, Maholm goes seven strong. Group effort loses 2-0 lead with cheap runs in 7th and 8th. Marmol and Wells each go two. Wells gets winning RBI!

17th W 6-0
Quick two from Phils. Garza CGS. Soto and Soriano both drive in 3.

18th W 3-1
Samardzija goes into the 7th, Kou, Wood, Marmol (unER) hold. Just six base runners and one extra base hit.

19th W 5-4
5 Run 5th, LaHair and Byrd drive in two with two outs. T. Wood 12 on base in 6 IP, good enough for win today. Volstad comes on in one run game (not what i want) and allows two runners before getting one out. Marmol allows two to reach before he closes. nervy.

20th L 2-5
Sox's prevent sweep. Dempster allows 12 to reach in 6 IP, always runners on base with him. JD hits 4th in lackluster offensive game.

21st W 8-4
Maholm picks a good day to allow 4 in 7. Mather hits 3-run bomb in third to put us up 6-1. 13 hits for a change!

22nd Big W 1-0
Back to seven hits, two walks. Castro hits a 9th inning winner. Garza throws one hit ball for seven. Kuo and Marmol get the credits.

23rd W 5-1
We sweep Houston. No crooked numbers but put up five runs. LaHair and Soriano (his 10th) go deep. Samardzija 8 innings 2 hits, our second straight 2 hit allowed game.

25th L 4-7
Dempster walks 4 more in 6 (era still 2.5). Kuo sinnaly gives up a run, two in fact getting only 1 out. era jumps to 1.86 Camp and Wood then give up runs as offense ties it in 7th and pulls it back to one in 8th for not.

26th L 1-5
19 LOB, Mather has 6. Malholm gives up 3 HR's

27th W 4-2
Garza stops the streak, ace status recently. 7.2 strong, did need Marmol's help for last out in 8th. Bryd and Soriano knock back to back doubles for winner and insurance. Castro scores twice.
Box score

Up Next Padres...

June

Padres leave 19 on base, we score 3 two out runs. Camp, Wood, Marmol take it from 7th in.
May 28th W 5-3

Samardzija gets the hook in the 3rd with 6 runs in. DeWitt and DeJesus plate two runs each on double and we tie it at 6-6. Padres then crush Camp for 4 runs as he gets his first loss. Castro's hitting streak reaches 20
29th L 6-10

Dempster gives up 4 in the first, only goes 3 IP. we start a couple rallies but nothing doing. Castro loses streak.
30th L 2-6

June Giants in town now

Soriano 2 run HR puts up 3-0 after four. Soto adds another blast. 8.2 IP for Maholm, Marmol is becoming quite the save vulture.
1st W 4-0

Castro's 3 run shot caps 5 run 3rd. Soto hits another HR and from there we got ourselves a blow out. 13 runs and 15 LOB. Garza loves it.
2nd W 13-3

Tied 3-3 in the 7th, Wood loads bases after getting 2 outs when a line drive single plates two.
3rd L 3-5

4th one more vs Giants...then off to Milwaukee

So i tried a slightly new format with result at bottom of recap, let me know what you guys think of the whole thread so far and any suggestion are welcome

Draft update
Draft will run with friday's sim (in the game, list is done already), should have something up saturday evening. We have made our fifth pick overall.

LF Alberto Dalsoglio, 17

-.541 HS avg 30/8 sb 1.083 SLG!
-plus speed, avg/above D
-$1.6m
-I almost took with the last pick, i almost didn't take him this pick. Is he going to develop enough power to be an all-star OF in bigs?

Overall it's been a great start on the field, 33-21 and in first place tie with the Reds. June now and it's time to hit the trade market (i've been quite on that front). We'll have an in depth look at the team as we approach the half way point over the weekend. For now we've got major WAR spikes. Castro hits 2.0 with Garza right there with him (1.9). Dempster and Wood round out top four. JD has taken over most everyday in RF, DeWitt is getting regular at bats at 3B with both doing very well. Soto is coming back strong and LaHair and Soriano have been steady power in the middle of lineup. Kuo (15 GP, only allowed ER in one!) has been a great addition to the pen and James Russell has been a quite surprise. More indepth with stats over the weekend suggestion comments please and minor league update coming too.

-Not what you'd expect from the 6th overall, i missed the pick, but no listed SP has better future stuff. Listed as MR and I'm not sure if he's a starter in the big's but i'll go off the assumption he is.
Turned me down just when i warming up to him. Made big offer (4+ mill). The $1.1 was misleading as he was an extremely hard to sign HS kid. At least i will pick again #7 overall next year

-So interesting, a top 5 type player at #43. Not sure where the nickname comes from but i like it. It helps to be a big market and have 7.5 mill to sign a guy like this.

LF Mike Barnes, 18/19, 75 ab, .520/.641/1.200 sb 18
-Vocal, student, positive

-Another top 10 type talent at 56 overall. If i can sign this guy i will have done very well indeed.
So Maverick is showing a little less potential then we drafted but is still high priority prospect. Comparable to Matt Garza, but Ruiz doesn't throw a fastball like Garza (or at all)
45/60 stuff 50/55 25/60 with his slider and chup both 45/65. Velocity up 93-95.
Barnes also doesn't look the 5 star player, more 3.5 star. His eye/power combo we drafted him for were overrated. Still compares to young Soriano with more walks and less K's
35/50 contact 40/60 30/60 hr 35/50 25/60

-65/75 sinker 65/80 curve
-70 stam, 96-98 mph, 72 G%, can bunt, fielding ok
-Slot
-After going for over budget elite talents i settled for a signable top talent. "Bonnie" should make a easy transition to the bullpen and closer role although some want to at least try him out as SP in the minors.
All the sudden he's throwing 7-8 mph slower! His stuff (sinker and curve) flattened out and his control is leaving him. Disappointing as that all is he is preforming well at (A) ball
stuff 60/65 65/70 45/50

Mather cut, Rizzo Up!

Joe Mather is gone, released to after hitting .169 w/.535 ops that's in 148 at bats. 4 hr's, including a recent 3 run blast, 17 rbi's but 40 K's

in his place top prospect Anthony Rizzo was called up from Iowa where he was hitting .311 w/ops over 1.000

Rizzo joins Garza, Samardizja, and Castro to make up the Cubs Core Four

July 16th

Were past the half way point now and the trade deadline is near. Time for another game of Buy, Sell, or Hold.

NL Central
Cards 52-37
Reds 51-38
Brew 49-39
Cubs 48-41

Now the Reds hold the last playoff spot, we're in the 8th place in the League but only 4 GB of our Division. The front office put out a team to compete and we've been happy with the results although the last month has been poor. The premise at the start of the season still holds true today, guys like LaHair and Dempster are move valuable to the Cubs then another team, so without question we will not be selling. Given our strong record and realistic chance of making the playoffs the front office has changed the Cubs status to BUY. 2B has been a soft spot, although DeWitt is deserving of at bats, but the biggest need is a RF to face lefties (Mather is gone). We already have 3 RF on the active roster, they're all lefties, so finding room for a 4th will be tricky. Surprisingly i dont see an old RF on the trade block, Manny is there and i can get him cheap but, like Soriano, he doesn't play right.

Player Stats
Primary lineup
RF DREW - modest 123 ab's with us so far. his SLG is up above .400 but the OBP is a paltry .319 not the stuff of a leadoff hitter
SS CASTRO - Great year, .463 SLG, power and speed (19/7 sb and 8 triples)
1B LAHAIR - Power and walks, leads team in both. RBI's too. Going to lose at bats to Rizzo
LF SORIANO - Strong bounce back year .805 OPS, 16/45 hr/rbi
2B DEWITT - Wow year, didn't play right away (my mistake). .302 AVG with .497 SLG
C SOTO - Not the middle of the order bat we thought .224/.676 OPS
3B STEWART - Hit 25 hr's in '09, then 18 '10, last year in 122 at bats hit zero with a .156 avg He's been great for us, .500 SLG in 160 ab
CF BYRD - Not sure what to do with this dead man walking, .250/.289/.395/.684 is not good enough but is a rookie going to do better?

INF Jeff Baker - awful 172 ab .209/.614 OPS
OF DeJesus - lost his job .247/.304/.354/.657 real could use him as top of order bat
2B Darwin Barney - lost his job .250/.294/.309/.602 a guy hitting .209 has higher OPS

Pen
Marmol - 30 saves 11.17 K/9 2.23 era He's been great
Kerry Wood - 40 hits 70 k's. Very strong year, among team leaders in war as setup guy
Kuo - FA signing 22 innings 1.23 era and 0.73 whip. Score.
Castillo - One of the other FA signing is filling in with 1.69 era in 10 innings
Camp - stopped at 5 wins, league average numbers

Swing guys
Randy Wells - latest to start, 35 innings 1.07 whip
James Russell - Up and down, 3-1 3.71
Travis Wood - 9 starts, 13 games, 56 innings, 4-3 5.40

Matt Garza - Just 7-6 despite a great year. 3.23 era
Samardzija - 8-5 3.55, keeping walks under control
Dempster - Says his WHIP is 1.35 but honestly i would have guessed a half of point higher. 5-8 with a low 3.34 era
Maholm - 6-7 4.89 era

July recap

After starting July 2-8 we rebounded to end the month 12-13

Randy Wells lead the staff with two wins and 2.77 era
Garza and Dempster were solid
Samardzija and Maholm had a bad month
Marmol was fantastic in 11 appearances, 18 K's, 9 saves, no runs

Rizzo has been sensational, 35 at bats 6 homers with a .914 slg
Jeff Baker had a .897 ops
Soriano knocked in 14 runs, 5 homers
DeWitt knocked in 12 while only hitting .159
Castaways, future past and present, Barney, Byrd, Soto had good months

Deadline past, August

No deals we're made, we had a chance to add Manny Ramirez but choose not too. Really quiet deadline for us.

1st W 5-1
Another win for Randy Wells, did give up 12 base runners in 6 & 2/3. Rizzo hits his 7th bomb and drives in 3

3rd W 4-2
Against old mate Ted Lilly who pitched very well for Dodgers but Samardzija out duels him for 10th win.

4th W 5-4
Dempster gets 23 outs, Marmol four. Rizzo hits 8th homer, 8 total bases in game

5th W 2-1
More great pitching, Maholm 8 innings 6 base runners. It's Wood who gets save

4-0 to start August, west coast trip moves to San Diego next before huge series vs Reds

we're 61-46 which is terrific but not in the playoffs. here is the NL

Mets ? 68-41
Reds 64-45
Braves 63-45
Cards 63-45
Cubs 61-46
NL West...tied..55-53

AL
Texas 74-33!
Tigers 65-44
TBB 62-46
Boston61-48
NYY 58-49
Angels 57-52

Biggest games too date

6th broke it open with four in the 10th, a walk, an error, and 3 singles.
W 6-4

7th WHAT!!!!! SEE for yourself
MLB Box Scores, Chicago Cubs at San Diego Padres, 08/07/2012
wow, we'll be coming back to this game

8th We must have been tired, just two hits
L 0-3

9th The First Place Reds are in town 4 game series! Dempster gets crushed in 6th
L 2-6

10th Eight strong from Maholm, Soriano and Bryd drop bombs
W 6-3

11th Garza an even stronger 8, Marmol another save
W 3-1

12th Rizzo, Soto, Barney hit homers, drive in two. A. Castillo gets destroyed in first bad outting, Kuo, Wood's, Marmol hold and save.
