Subject: First-Year Player Draft The Providence Grays had the first overall pick in today’s draft, and selected SP Alex McIntosh, an 18-year-old high school player from Napa, CA. The Grays also had the #3 pick and selected 18-year-old high school SP Melvin King from Stow, OR. We have pick #23, even though our normal pick is #29, because several teams forfeited their first-round pick by signing free agents. Louisville selections: Round 1 (#23 overall): SP Juan Jose Rodgers (age 18, throws R), Boston MA, 5-star potential, fastball 94-96 mph, curveball, slider, 1.41 ERA against average competition, 127 K’s in 89 IP, exceptional control with a 6:1 K/BB ratio, hard worker and smart, rated extremely hard to sign because he has a scholarship offer to Boston College Round 1A (#37 overall): CF Edward Brooks (age 17, bats L), Halstead KS, 5-star, five-tool player with superb speed and bat control, good defense with great range, OPS 1.43 against average competition, great intangibles, rated extremely hard to sign Round 2 (#63 overall): RF Claude Butler (age 17, bats L), Carson CA, 5-star, power hitter with great speed, should draw plenty of walks, good defense with a cannon arm, good intangibles, rated extremely hard to sign Round 3 (#95 overall): RF Don Green (age 20, bats L), UC-Riverside, 4.5-star, leadoff hitter with great speed and eye, doesn’t strike out much, good defense, rated extremely hard to sign Round 4 (#126 overall): 2B Kyu-Min Park (age 21, bats R), Baylor, 5-star, solid offensive skills with good power and speed, defense needs work – will try him at first base, good intangibles, rated extremely hard to sign Round 5 (#163 overall): SP Donald Johnson (age 23, throws R), UNLV, 2-star, does everything well but throws dead straight and has to change that, very smart and works hard so I think our coaches can make him into a fifth starter, big kid at 6’7” and 215, rated hard to sign All of these picks were based on the recommendation of my new scout, Jorge Enriquez. It looks like I will have my work cut out for me trying to sign them. There are more position players than pitchers, but Enriquez was focused on best player available and I went along to see how he does. |

Both sides are said to be pleased with the way the trade worked out. This year Stanley has socked 58 hits in 216 at-bats for a .269 average with 7 home runs. He is getting on base at a .325 pace and his totals also include 27 RBIs and 20 runs scored. Stanley, a left-handed batter and a good defensive catcher, will back up Duncan Bland. Reserve catcher Troy Daniels (batting .042 in 8 games) was demoted to AAA to make room for Stanley on the roster. The Colonels announced that AAA catcher Larry Matchim had been placed on waivers to remove him from the secondary roster. The Colonels also announced that former Louisville infielder Juan Aponte has signed a minor league contract and will report to AAA Lexington. |

EDIT: So sorry I ended up commenting on your other dynasty here by accident! But since I already posted and can't delete it I just want to say good job for juggling the two dynasties!

CBA STANDINGS
Saturday, July 1, 2006 Louisville and Dallas are cruising toward a possible rematch of last year’s championship series. The remaining two playoff spots are up for grabs among San Diego, Seattle, Chicago, and Milwaukee. The Patriot League races are very competitive and there are eight teams in strong contention for four spots. The shocking Orlando Sharks continue to lead the Southern Division via a combination of pitching, speed, and defense. The Sharks had four consecutive last-place finishes before getting to third place last season at 79-83. They have taken the next step or at least that’s how it appears at the halfway mark, but there is a lot of baseball left to play. Last edited by Orcin; 10-20-2017 at 06:02 PM. |

LEAGUE LEADERS
Saturday, July 1, 2006 Charleston RF Patrick Timm was the Patriot League’s Outstanding Player in 2005, and he is a clear favorite to repeat in 2006. He was Player of the Month for May and June, and he is challenging the CBA single-season home run record of 76 set by Akinora Ishikawa in 1999. I always enjoy pointing out that OOTP trading is not as easy as it looks sometimes. You recall a trade that I made last summer for pitching prospect Juan Hernandez. It looked like a steal at the time. Hernandez still looks good, but not quite as good. Sacramento installed the minor league reliever that I gave up, Bill Ward, as their closer. You can see Ward listed at #3 on the saves list so maybe the Outlaws weren’t so dumb after all. Last edited by Orcin; 10-20-2017 at 06:03 PM. |

LOUISVILLE COLONELS
Saturday, July 1, 2006 As you can see in the team rankings, we have achieved a better balance on the team this year. I would still like to see the defense a little higher in the rankings. I think the home runs will be there in the second half as Brown, Bland, and Simon hit their quotas. The lineup is a work in progress, but I like this one with the speed at the top. Byrne would prefer to bat Simon #1, Hartman #2, Dominguez #3, and John #7. I like John better in the #2 spot because of his low strikeout total. Hartman still has work to do on his game, but he is only 22 years old. I still envision Simon settling in at the bottom part of the order and driving in runs for us. Dominguez could swap with Simon eventually but I am playing the hot hand in the #3 spot at the moment. I can’t say enough good things about Aaron Wilkerson. He has been a great fifth starter and gives me the luxury of keeping Juan Hernandez at AAA to work on his stuff and control. Enriquez says that Hernandez needs to bring his stuff up a notch to compete at the big league level. He has 101 K’s in 96 IP at AAA, so maybe he is making progress. You may notice that closer George King is injured with a diagnosis pending. That just happened yesterday and has not been reported yet. If King is seriously injured, the contingency plan at closer is Edgardo Garza, the best overall candidate for the job. Brooks has better strikeout potential and Jones is also an option, but Garza deserves the first chance because he has more experience. A year ago, I would have moved O’Daniel into the role but I have better younger options now. I will let my favorite blogger (CBATradeRumors.com) make some points about the team in the next post, and you can just peruse these stats on your own as you wish. I do want to point out a couple of minor things. Backup catcher Rich Stanley was the starter for Salt Lake City prior to the trade, so his stats reflect his activity there. He will be a free agent after this season, but he is anxious to sign a contract extension with us at a very reasonable price. It will likely happen soon. You will notice some high at bat totals for reserves due in part to various injuries but also a determined effort to get the bench players in the lineup once or twice per week. I hope this will pay off late in the season in the form of fresh and healthy starters. Last edited by Orcin; 10-20-2017 at 06:04 PM. |

2006 Mid-Season Recap: Louisville Colonels
(courtesy of cbatraderumors.com) The Louisville Colonels had some issues to address in the off-season, especially the large hole left in their starting rotation by the departure of 2004 Outstanding Pitcher Brian Wilson. GM Otto Orcin filled the hole by trading a minor leaguer to Chicago for Aaron Wilkerson, a fifth starter made redundant by the Cougars’ signing of free agent starting pitcher (you guessed it) Brian Wilson. Wilkerson (6-4, 4.06) has a winning record and a respectable ERA, while Wilson (6-7, 5.35) has neither. It is not really clear what happened here, but this writer’s money is on the coaching staff at Louisville. They seem to have a knack for turning water into wine (see Brian Wilson in 2003 when he was 8-20 with Phoenix and Aaron Wilkerson’s 8-14 record in 2005 if you need proof). Orcin’s most surprising off-season move was the firing of long-time scout Fernando Candelaria. Insiders say that Orcin allowed new scout Jorge Enriquez to run the entire first-year player draft. We won’t know the consequences of that move for several years, but it seems that Orcin has confidence in his new advisor. Orcin apparently trusted Enriquez to make the right call on another key decision – the trade of blue-chip outfield prospects with Cleveland. Juan Moran is batting cleanup for Cleveland and hitting .219 with 8 home runs. Ron Hartman bats leadoff for Louisville and has a .386 on-base percentage with 15/16 stolen bases and a good start on the Gold Glove Award in right field. We’ll give the edge to the Orcin/Enriquez team so far. Louisville’s offense is more balanced after the trade, and that pitching staff is still the best in the league. The defense had the potential to go south after Orcin traded away Gold Glove center fielder Manuel Jaramillo in the off-season. Pedro Dominguez has stepped into the center field spot and made only one error so far with great range and a +5.6 zone rating. In addition, rookie Cristo Rodriguez has taken over at shortstop and is well on his way to a Gold Glove of his own. The emergence of Rodriguez has allowed Pierre-Louis Simon to take over at third base, again at the top of the league defensively at his position. Throw in one of the best catchers in the league (Duncan Bland) and you have several reasons why Louisville is the CBA’s #1 team in runs allowed. The Colonels have made no secret of their philosophy. Spend heavily on scouting, player development, and coaching in order to keep a pipeline of young talent coming up through the organization. Pay close attention to character traits and team chemistry. Let the older big-money players (example: Wilson, Fletcher, Sanders) go at the point of diminishing returns, regardless of how many good years they may have left. Louisville enjoys the cheaper and arguably more productive front-end of their career, while another team pays a high price for a good year or two at the beginning of the decline phase. It is hard to argue with the plan when you study the results – five playoff appearances in five years. Louisville is out in front again in their 162-game pre-season phase, otherwise known as the Federal Midwest Division race, and you can buy those tickets now for playoff appearance number six in October. |

Old Sal is old, and he sleeps a lot for an old man. Maybe he is depressed? Sal likes the look of the Louieville lineup. Sal is a fan of Hartman; he likes that OBP.
Tell Sal about Mike Yates. Sal cannot remember where this one came from. |

There's a good reason why you cannot remember his origins. His past is very unremarkable. Mike Yates was drafted out of high school in 1996 round #4 by the Phoenix Coyotes. Yates kicked around in their farm system, never rising above AA, until 2002 when he became a minor league free agent. I signed him in April 2003 and he moved up to AAA after nine AA starts. He has been there (Lexington) since, but this is his first All-Star appearance ever. Yates career AAA record: 52-29, 4.23 ERA, 105 starts, 708 IP, 747 K, 195 BB, 1.27 WHIP Enriquez has him rated 6/5/6, 2.5 stars. He looks like a classic AAAA player but we will never know unless someone gives him a chance. He does not have a major league appearance. |

Where Are They Now?
I want to provide a mid-season update on some other players of interest from around the league. For former Louisville players, I will remind you why they are no longer on the team. I apologize in advance if I have missed your favorite player here. SP Jorge Figueroa, New York Monarchs (7-7, 2.75 ERA) SP Todd Fletcher, Charlotte Knights (4-8, 5.85 ERA) – traded for Antonio Luna SP Johnny Savard, Charlotte Knights (6-6, 5.10 ERA) – traded for Antonio Luna SP Brian Wilson, Chicago Cougars (6-7, 5.35 ERA) – left as free agent SP Pedro Castro, Providence Grays (9-6, 4.46 ERA) – traded for Rafael Valdez SP Warren Corbishley, Denver Miners (1-5, 8.12 ERA) – traded for Russell Bennett CL Lucas Sanders, Washington Admirals (3-1, 24 SV, 0.98 ERA) – left as free agent CL Hector De La Hoya, Indianapolis Indians (1-3, 18 SV, 4.58 ERA) – traded for Luna CL Bill Ward, Sacramento Outlaws (3-0, 21 SV, 1.96 ERA) – traded for Juan Hernandez 1B Jon Schultz, Charlotte Knights (.282/.363/.581, 22 HR, 56 RBI) CF Manuel Jaramillo, Providence Grays (.293/.358/.502) – traded for Rafael Valdez RF Juan Moran, Cleveland Rockers (.213/.268/.439) – traded for Ron Hartman LF Hugh McGlone, Cleveland Rockers (.262/.304/.439) – left as free agent LF Harry Hall (injured, out for the season) – traded for Eddie Payne LF Eddie Payne (injured, out for the season) – traded for Lorenzo Olivares I admit some regret over Bill Ward and Manuel Jaramillo. I blame Candelaria for the loss of Ward because he waived an inflated image of Hernandez in front of me. Jaramillo was my own doing, but Dominguez was the right choice in center field. As our blogger said, the philosophy is clear and sometimes it is better to trade a year early than a year late. |

Sal isn't happy looking at Lucas Sanders' stats while waiting for a diagnosis on King. Might be time for Mr. Jones to take over the closer's role!

He needs 1-2 weeks of rest, so he will go on the 15-day D/L retroactive to June 30. Garza will close. • Rob Bryant was recalled from AAA to replace King on the roster. • 07/04: PHX 5, LOU 4 – Simon 4-5, 3 DBL, RBI • 07/05: PHX 7, LOU 4 – John 1-3, HR, 2 RBI • Cincinnati SP Dan Todd (6-9, 2.51) was diagnosed with shoulder inflammation and will miss the rest of the season. • 07/06: LOU 7, SLC 6 – Morgan 1-4, HR, 4 RBI • 07/07: LOU 15, SLC 7 – Bland 4-6, HR (13), 5 RBI (42); Simon 4-5, 2 SB, 3 RS • 07/08: LOU 6, SLC 5 – Morgan 3-4, 2 HR (33), 3 RBI (85) • 07/09: LOU 12, SLC 6 – Rodriguez 3-3 (.309), 2 HR (16), 2 RBI (48), SB (19) • This week: All-Star break followed by the annual inter-league weekend special featuring a home (2) & away (2) series vs. the Charlotte Knights (45-45). I like Garza as the closer in waiting because of that amazing K/BB ratio (nearly 10/1). He also has more stamina than Brooks or Jones, allowing him to work several days in a row. (The closer gets a lot of work on a team that wins 100 games.) |

Sal does not question Mr. Orcin's evaluation or preference. But Sal points out, the closer does not get a lot of work on a team that wins 100 games by scores of 15-7 and 12-6!
