PBDL Official Launch Thread - Very Unique Promotion / Relegation League
Edit (9/10/12): We do currently have openings, ping me if interested.
I posted a feeler thread a few weeks ago regarding this league concept, and interest seemed high enough to try an official launch (note that some settings have been tweaked so be sure to read this post and the Constitution). Please note that this league may take a couple of weeks to fill up and get off the ground so if you are looking for immediate action, this may not work for you. My initial plan was to launch post labor day, and that still may end up happening depending on how the response rate is. But with the league file/reports/forum/website all ready to go, I figured I would start taking reservations, so without further ado... Full League Name (Initials): Premier Baseball Dynasty League (PBDL) Main URL: Premier Baseball Dynasty League Reports URL: BNN Home Page Boards URL: Premier Baseball Dynasty League Forums Commissioner(s) OOTP Forum Username(s): greenrebellion (seeking co-commissioner, please PM if interested) Email Address: PBDLCommish@gmail.com OOTP Version: OOTP 13 Game Needed: Required Players: Fictional # of Teams: 24 Export Deadlines Days And Times: Sun, Tue, Thu 10 PM EST (Saturday morning sim added during offseason with a 9 AM EST export deadline) League Time Per Sim: 7 days First Season: 2013 Latest Season: 2013 Currently Available Teams: See second post Special Rules & Settings: See below The Premier Baseball Dynasty League (PBDL) runs a promotion relegation system with 3 leagues: Gold League – 8 Teams Silver League – 8 Teams Bronze League – 8 Teams ![]() ![]() ![]() Fictional players, logos/jerseys based on NHL teams. Regular Season – 84 games, play each team within your league 12 times (7x12=84) 4 of 8 teams make the playoffs. Both rounds are 9 game series. Two teams get promoted in the bronze and silver league every season. Promotion occurs for the team that finishes first overall in the regular season as well as for the team that wins the championship. If the first place team wins the championship, then the runner up in the championship game gets promoted. The bottom two teams in Gold and Silver get relegated. Draft order is as follows (lottery %'s subject to change): 8th place finish – Lottery 15% chance of 1st pick 7th place finish – Lottery 25% chance of 1st pick 6th place finish – Lottery 30% chance of 1st pick 5th place finish – Lottery 30% chance of 1st pick 4th place finish – 5th overall 3rd place finish – 6th overall 2nd place finish – 7th overall 1st place finish – 8th overall Customized financial system that is driven purely off of a rolling five year point accumulation system that drives media revenue as the sole source of revenue. There are no ticket sales and there is no merchandising revenue. The better you perform over the rolling five years, the more revenue you will receive. As set up, it should provide a decent degree of financial parity while rewarding successful franchises. Please refer to the Constitution for a more detailed explanation of how finances will work. Other Settings: • Ratings: 1-20 • Potential Ratings scale: 1-20 • Other Ratings scale: 1-20 • Overall Ratings (stars) – Off • Coaches: ON • Scouting: OFF • Designated Hitter: No • Payroll Cap: None • Cash Cap: No Cap • Expanded Rosters: Yes • Minor League Free Agency: No • Personality Ratings: Yes • Morale Ratings: Yes • Suspensions: Yes • Drug Suspensions: No • Visiting Team’s Gate Share: N/A • Rule V Draft: Disabled • Waiver System: Enabled • Minors: AAA, AA, A **Please note these modifications from Default:** • Injury Frequency - Low (works better given short season) • Rotation size - Four versus default five • Pitcher stamina - Normal (rather than low in modern day MLB leagues) • Active Roster Size - 24 versus default 25 • Secondary Roster Size - 35 (non-material change as there's no Rule V Draft) • Service time required for arbitration - 2 years (default 3) • Minimum service years for free agency - 5 years (default 6) I truly believe this league will provide a very engaging experience. The playoff setup keeps the season interesting even if your team is struggling as it should only take a ~.500 record or so to make the playoffs. The season is short enough that a rebuilding team will be able to remain engaged. The draft is also orchestrated to reward teams that are doing everything they can to find that extra piece whether through free agency, on the waiver wire, or in their own minor league system that will get them a few extra wins (no more coasting to an easy rebuild but still friendly enough to allow weaker teams to get better over time). Finally, the financial setup along with no cash cap insures that all decisions count. Will you focus resources on player development, coaching, or the players on the field...how will you deal with the overpriced, aging vet who is hogging your precious cash resources? If you'd like a team, please reserve by replying to this thread with the team you would like (make sure its not already taken or list your top 3 choices to insure you get a spot). Would be helpful if you also PM or post your email address as well as I'll need that once we move forward. The available teams along with their initial league designation (Gold, Silver, Bronze) will be tracked in the second post in this thread. Again, please be sure to read this post and the Constitution as there are a few unique rules and settings. Please read both thoroughly before reserving a team. Here's the background story for the league, ample imagination required
![]() Throughout much of 2012, the NHLPA and NHL threw various proposals and counterproposals together in an attempt to reach a labor agreement ahead of the expiring collective bargaining agreement. The league insisted on a lower percentage of revenues going to players, more in line with the NBA and the NFL, while the union was vehement that they would not accept a further reduction in player salaries having given up enough ground in the previous CBA negotiations in 2005 when a salary cap was agreed to. Despite several meetings leading up to training camp, both sides remained far apart in September 2012 and it quickly became clear that at least part of the 2012-2013 NHL season would be cancelled. As the new year approached, the sides continued to negotiate fervently in an attempt to save at least a portion of the season. But alas, on January 14th, 2013, Gary Bettman (NHL Commissioner) announced that the entire 2012-2013 NHL season would in fact be cancelled. This represented the second time in less than a decade that the NHL cancelled an entire season and the NHL remains the only major professional sports league to ever do so. This of course prompted many gloom and doomers to fear that this may cripple the long term financial viability and success of the league. But the bigger and more immediate concern for many of the constituents of the league was how costly a second lockout would prove to a variety of vested parties. First and foremost, the owners with tremendous investments in their teams had to sacrifice an entire year of ticket sales and revenues. Owners of the various stadiums that housed NHL teams would also suffer. Local cities and businesses, which relied on game day revenue, were also decimated. In a last ditch effort to generate some revenue, the owners of the league licensed the logos and uniform designs to a group of entrepreneurs who devised a way to launch a competing league to the MLB. The goal of this new league, dubbed the Premier Baseball Dynasty League (PBDL), was to solve many of the inherent problems that plagued the MLB and return baseball to its core values. The PBDL was structured into a 3 tier system that would enhance the competition level amongst teams. League revenues and finances were tightly managed by the league with funds distributed based on performance and thus parity was greatly improved. There wasn’t much time to arrange all the details. The ownership group got to work right away after the cancellation of the NHL season trying to find baseball talent that wasn’t quite good enough for the MLB. Hype surrounding this league was palpable and players flocked from across the world to participate in exhibition games where scouts would have a chance to rate and write up reports on the players. Individuals varied across the age spectrum, some were never considered good enough to compete in the MLB and thus retired and moved on to other careers. The allure of a second chance to play professional baseball was enough for many of these older individuals to take a shot. Many young players who were former minor league fillers for MLB teams jumped at the chance to have a shot at professional ball and the contracts associated with it. While money was certainly not going to be nearly as good as in the MLB, the top crop of PBDL players are expected to make over $1.0 million and even the lowest skilled players on PBDL rosters are expected to make at least $50K, not a bad salary to play the game you love. As no formal CBA had yet been put in place for the PBDL, finding talent was basically done on a first come first serve basis. Contracts were doled out based how well players performed in exhibition and also how good of an agent the potential player had. Once April 2nd hit, a CBA had finally been negotiated and an official process for drafting and signing free agents had been determined. With the start of the inaugural season just two months away, there was still much work to be done as teams rapidly worked to hire top notch GM’s that could assemble the ad hoc collection of talent into a cohesive organization that could one day compete for a Gold Championship! Sounds like fun! I'd like to reserve a team
1st Choice - Toronto Maple Leafs (SIL) 2nd Choice - Minnesota Wild (GOL) 3rd Choice - New York Islanders (SIL) I'm still pretty new to OOTP so I think it makes a lot of sense to have someone who doesn't really know what they're doing run the Maple Leafs. |
