Player Overalls and Potentials

hey i just got the mobile version of this game and im struggling with to figure out this game. i did a fantasy draft to start the season and got alot of high potential young players on my team so i could do a rebuilding project. i knew i wasnt going to have a good season obviously but i figured that by seasons end my players would progress a little and my team would slowly get better. instead my players barely increased in overall if any and almost all of them went from 4+ starts in potential down to 2 stars or even lower. am i doing something wrong or is this type of rebuilding type of project really not possible?
