Putting out Feelers for Interest in New Fictional League

Unfortunately, my first crack at running an online league ended too soon as the guy I partnered with and who owned the forum/server/website etc. went MIA which proved fatal to the league. I now have a site setup with All Sim and would like to get back into the commissioning business and have been trying to come up with a creative & fun idea for a league. Before I go balls to the wall setting it up, I figured that I would see if anyone would be interested in the concept I came up with.

First, the motto of the league would be more about maximizing the “fun” aspect versus realism, which means gearing the league more towards what works best in OOTP versus the MLB. So don’t read this concept with preconceived notions about the MLB!

Also I’ll preface this by stating that I’m not taking GM reservations at this point nor am I looking for specific feedback on how the league is setup, I am simply looking to see if there would be any interest in participating in this league with the parameters as I lay out below. Depending on the feedback, I envision launching this league post Labor Day once the forum activity begins to pick up again.

Promotion Relegation League with 3 Leagues:
Gold League – 8 Teams
Silver League – 8 Teams
Bronze League – 8 Teams

Fictional players, logos/jerseys would all be based on NHL teams.

Regular Season – 84 games, play each team within your league 12 times (7x12=84)

6 of 8 teams make the playoffs. Seeds 1 and 2 get a first round bye. All 9 game series.

Two teams get promoted in the bronze and silver league every season. Promotion occurs for the team that finishes first overall in the regular season as well as for the team that wins the championship. If the first place team wins the championship, then the runner up in the championship game gets promoted. The bottom two teams in Gold and Silver get relegated.

Draft order is as follows:
8th place finish – 3rd overall
7th place finish – 2nd overall
6th place finish – 1st overall
5th place finish – 4th overall
4th place finish – 5th overall
3rd place finish – 6th overall
2nd place finish – 7th overall
1st place finish – 8th overall

Customized financial system that is driven purely off of a rolling four year point accumulation system that drives media revenue as the sole source of revenue. There are no ticket sales and there is no merchandising revenue. The better you perform over the rolling four years, the more revenue you will receive. The minimum amount of revenue will be set at $9 million and the maximum will be $12 million. This ensures a degree of parity while still rewarding successful franchises.

Other Settings:
• Ratings: 1-20
• Potential Ratings scale: 1-20
• Other Ratings scale: 1-20
• Overall Ratings (stars) – Off
• Coaches/Scouting: No
• Designated Hitter: No
• Payroll Cap: None
• Cash Cap: $3,500,000
• Expanded Rosters: Yes
• Minor League Free Agency: No
• Personality Ratings: Yes
• Morale Ratings: Yes
• Suspensions: Yes
• Drug Suspensions: No
• Visiting Team’s Gate Share – N/A
• Rule V Draft – Disabled
• Waiver System – Enabled
• Minors – AAA, AA, A

That’s the gist of it. I think this solves a lot of problems inherent in many online leagues, namely that teams that are out of the hunt have to wade through a 162 game season which at times can get boring. Given the minor draft pick penalty given to the 7th/8th place teams, this should create a ton of action all season long. Furthermore, with 6 of 8 teams making the playoffs, this keeps everyone fully engaged. Yes, playoffs can be a crapshoot but that is why the first place team gets promoted whether or not they win the championship. The promotion/relegation style should keep people interested long term as merely winning a bronze or silver championship still leaves room for further accomplishment, win a gold championship!

Not sure what you mean by location of the league? Teams would be US/Canada.

Thanks for the interest thus far, keep it coming if this sounds like a league that would interest you.

That's what I meant. Completely forgot the line about basing it on the NHL.

Would you consider a lottery instead of the set order for figuring out the amateur draft order? Just a suggestion that would seem fair.

Interest

huge NHL fan(played tons of EHM), love the variety you have included.
Email/AIM when you get up and running - laptophound@gmail.com

How do you decide who gets placed in each division? - team selection etc?
Thanks for putting this together with some thought

My current thinking is to sim the league from 1997 to 2012 all AI control, but promote and relegate teams during these seasons. That way the teams that end up in the respective divisions once handed over to humans "should" be there based on the team's talent levels. Then clear all history and start the league from there.

But some of these finer details will be discussed among the final group of GM's once the league is officially launched.

Glad to see that there is decent interest thus far. I personally think it could turn out to be a very engaging and fun concept.

Please PM me if anyone is interested in co-commissioning this league with me. Preferably looking for someone that has been around the OOTP forums for a while. I don't think the responsibilities would be too terribly involved outside of running some of the sims and helping enforce some of the custom rules that will be in place.
