Contract Restructuring

I know this probably can't be implemented in current versions of OOTP, but it seems like it'd be a good idea for future versions of the game. Can you create an option where you can ask players (particularly highly paid core players) if they are willing to restructure their existing contract in order to free up some money. Some players would say no, but others, who are more team-oriented, may be open to it.

I don't know that this is big in the MLB per se, but it seems to be pretty big in other sports leagues like the NFL and the NBA.

What do others think about this feature? Yea or Nay?

You can backload contracts now. What kind of restructuring are you talking about? Baseball is different than other sports, the contracts are guaranteed. I don't think it would be good for the game to allow restructuring because this would just shift the amount of the current year to other years and cause financial issues in the future.

For example, I have a starting pitcher who used to be an ace, but at 35, his talent is declining. He has a $19M/yr contract.

It would be convenient if there was a way for me, as the GM, to inquire as to whether this player would be open to restructuring his contract, either by taking less money per year, or by backloading it, or by spreading out the money over more years (less per year). Essentially, it'd be a re-negotiation process where you'd ask the player: "Would you take less money so that we can sign more talented players and better our chances at winning a championship?"

I found a real-world example on the web:

I guess the point is, that it is not allowed in the real life game. I understand that not everybody plays that way so it could be a requested feature.

I added a real-world example, I believe, after you posted this. I do understand that it's not as common in the MLB though.

If they were to add this sort of feature, I'd assume it would a feature you could turn on/off in the game settings.

That example has extenuating circumstances though.

Knuckler - the example you gave is of an extreme circumstance where the player has broken one or more rules and/or laws. In that case, Hernandez was also placed on the Restricted List for rules violations. The Indians had every right to terminate his contract because he falsely represented himself.

Restructuring is possible, but that involves guaranteed deferred payments which makes things far more complicated from a budgetary perspective. However, MLBPA rules state that you cannot restructure a contract so that a player makes less than they currently do.
