Gap in Morale logic

If OOTP is going to have Morale (and it should) and it's going to impact player development as severely as it does, then it needs to be fully implemented in the minor leagues...specifically Player Expectations. The Major leagues are fine as almost every player has something listed there - so if a guy is Angry there's no mystery why - but the ONLY time I ever see anything in that field for minor leaguers is when they've been demoted from the Show and think they belong back there.

The minors thing is so frustrating because, first, it defies logic. There are constantly players in my minor leagues who are mostly Normal or Unhappy in the specific categories, but Angry overall...yet under Player Expectations they've got "None". Well, then what are they angry about? Again, it might not matter f it didn't seem to impact player development so drastically, but it does. Second, even if a guy is "Great" all the way through, how can he not have expectations? Doesn't even have to be a lvl of minor leagues...maybe he's rated highly at 4 positions but really wants to be used at one of them. Make him play at another spot and, over time, he gets angry.

In real life I can have the manager sit down with a guy and ask why he's angry. In a sim, we need some actionable info...throw us a bone!

In my limited experience with OOTP, I suggest you don't credit too much of a player's morale to his expectations, especially in the minors. In reality, while a lot of those kids probably have lofty dreams, they understand it's a long-shot. They have to play their tails off to get promoted and hope to someday be in the big-leagues.

Expectations are for high draft picks (who think they should be moving up faster, already in the big-leagues, playing more often, etc.) and those who are already stars. Those guys think they should be in the starting rotation, or the closer, or starting in the field somewhere, or even demand "middle of the order."

For minor-leaguers, if they're getting to play a little and doing all right when they do get in, they'll probably be fairly happy, provided the team doesn't stink. My whole team at Wilmington in the Carolina League is furious right now because their record is awful. And some of them are angry at themselves because they aren't playing well.

I just went through my entire minor-league system and the only guys I have who are playing for a winning team, yet angry, are clearly either mad at their own performance or (typically) upset that they got demoted.

I'm curious how you know what the impact is? I look at morale closely and don't see an effect until the player is MLB ready. When I say effect it is a nebulous thing, a state of mind. I don't see ratings or talent hits.

What specifically happens to player development?

Are you not seeing any feedback here:

i don't recall ever seeing a player that was unhappy that wasn't unhappy in at least one of the areas listed on the player's page.

As far as impact, i don't recall having an unhappy player's play decline. Usually, the player plays bad, i bench him, then he becomes unhappy.

The only time i would really worry about the player's morale is when its time to sign him to an extension. Other than that, i wouldn't worry about them. You're probably playing with between 40 and 150 players in your organization. You can't keep all of them happy.

I'll admit I haven't isolated cause and effect, but it's been my experience (no compiled data) that a player's dev slows down more and more as his morale decreases and it seems the only factor in cases where I've had potential 4-5 star players go to 1 star minor league fillers in less than 2 seasons. I would love to know it has no impact as I chase my tail way too often on keeping my top prospects' spirits up, but it would also confuse the hell outta me on what causes those "lumps" when everything, even attributes, are sparkling.

My higher draft pick often get pissy within 1-2 years in the minors, but I see no effect. I now have two sure fire SP prospects who are show ready but I'm unwilling to trade any of my established pitchers before the season starts. Both of these prospects are likely to spend time in the bullpen or AAA. I see no evidence that this jerking around will turn them into flame outs.
