More of an interesting statistic than a dynasty

Just found this interesting - I have a 24 team league with five levesl of minor that I ran a 112 year history on. I then took over the Chicago team in 2012. This year, my team is oddly - 14-8 on the road and 0-10 at home. I've never seen anything quite like this!

Anyway, it got me thinking - does anyone know the record for the most home losses in a row to start a season? I figure I must be somewhat close at this point.

That's a good one. I checked out the 1988 Orioles, who lost their first 21 gams of the season. Eight of those losses came at home. They broke the streak on the road, and then they won the first game of their next home stand.

Your guys are, therefore, two games worse than the '88 O's.

hilarious

I also checked the 1962 mets (lost their first seven at home before a win) and the 1899 Spiders (won their first home game) with no luck. I'll keep digging and see what I can find.

I checked the Spiders, too. What a horrible team! At least they got to play home games at the beginning of the season. By July, they were almost never in Cleveland because other teams refused to play there because the visitors' share of the gate receipts weren't enough to cover expenses.

Their owner also owned another team--the St. Louis Browns, I think--and "traded" the Spiders' best players to the other team. No wonder they stunk.

The St. Louis PERFECTOES. The Robison brothers believed that St. Louis was 'more deserving' (richer) of a champion than Cleveland, and that trading all the good Spider players would get them there.

They finished fifth.

Go back a few months and you'll find that the Royals started this season 0-10 before beating the Yankees where Rivera got injured pre-game.
There have been two others with longer streaks - the 1994 Cubs 0-12, and the 1913 Yankees 0-17, with one tie in their 11th game against the Red Sox. The Yanks' first win at the Polo Grounds was against the White Sox on June 7.

For some reason I thought the Royals had won their home opener before they started their home losing streak.

Thanks for the info, Sdpm100.

Thanks both - fascinating!

Much appreciate the history lesson!

You'll be happy to hear my team finally won their first home game after losing the first 11. Glad to know I didn't challenge the record. Oddly - my road record thus far is quite good so we'll see how the season turns out. I suspect it was just an unusally bad luck streak rather than some major weakness in the team - but we'll see.

No problem guys. I didn't know myself and if it wasn't for KC this year I probably would not have known where to even start to look. All the best.

That's right, the Robisons renamed them. If I remember right, the Browns had been almost as bad in '98 as the Spiders were in '99.

Wrong forum. Also, this year's Red Sox were much better on the road than at home some time in the middle of May.
