Is it just me or are these things starting to feel less special?
I would love to see a statistical analysis of why these things are becoming more common. I have a few theories of my own. #1 Strike outs are at record highs and thus fewer balls are being put into play. #2 Fielders are simply better than ever before. Each season we keep seeing new records for fielding % and I think players today are all around better athletes with better mechanics, arms and range. #3 Baseball was deeply embarrassed by the steroid scandal and the year 2000 was also an embarrassment as the league had it's most extreme offensive season ever. I think since then there was been a concerted behind the scenes effort on the part of the commissioners office to increase the strike zone by a mandate to the umpires. I would love for a baseball prospectus article on this issue by someone with more time than me and better research tools. |

Not really Not even close A conspiracy would be altering baseballs to make them less tightly wound and thus softer. Or asking umpires to favor certain teams. What I suggested happens all the time in other sports. Just this season the NBA head office asked all officials to begin calling certain fouls differently and changed the rules on certain fouls. Every season the NHL and NFL also have officials meetings to change how things are called. It is a constantly evolving thing. Baseball calls are more cut and dry. Out or not out. HR or not a HR. Foul or not foul. About the only judgment calls that umpires have to make is the strike zone. The head office could pretty easily convene an umpires meeting and express a desire to expand the strike zone a little to lessen offense. Is that a conspiracy? No, not even close. It is simply a method that the league can use to manage offensive numbers. A conspiracy would be to expand the strike zone for certain teams to try and affect the standings. And I have watched baseball for a good solid 20 years now and I have witnessed the strike zone morph from being the size of a keyhole to the current standard which is noticeably larger. There has to be some explanation for more strike outs too. Batting methods are not drastically different from the 90s. We are still in the same 'era' as far as how hitter approach an at bat. Yet we have seen a very significant spike in strikeouts across the league. |

It's a natural and sometimes an unnatural ebb and flow of the game. Pitching in 2012 is better than ever. We see on a nightly basis young 20 something pitchers throwing 93-97mph with movement. Sure they don't last long, instead they turn it over to specialists that may throw even better than they do.
One could make the case that no-hitters and perfect games are more of an accomplishment because pitchers rarely go 9 innings any more. I wont yet. Seattle are a pathetic hitting team 0.285 OBP and an OPS+ of 83 so far in 2012. Humber can't pick his opponents so he gets kudos for making it work when the opportunity came his way.

Surprised this didn't get bumped at all tonight. Weaver dominates again.

I can't believe that in all my years of watching baseball, this is the first no-hitter I've actually watched from beginning to end. Usually I just catch the end when/if ESPN jumps to it. I was stuck watching Ervin Santana's on my computer at work last year.
As an Angels fan, and a Weaver fan, I was thrilled. Bad luck has caused me to miss his starts every time I've been in CA for a game, but I'm crossing my fingers for the weekend I'm there in June. Congratulations to Jered Weaver! |

I watched the last 3-4 innings of the game. Weaver pitched a gem. He definitely brought his A-game. But I had to wonder about the HP umpire's strike zone. It was huge! Do you think an umpire gets "caught up" in the moment?

Great game by Santana..but one line drive over the third base bag kicked up chalk...clearly a fair ball.
They showed the ball mark in the chalk a couple of times after that. |

No longer do we have to hear that running joke: "Old Mets never die; they just pitch no-hitters after leaving the Mets."
