Should I trade him?
Hey guys, I would really appreciate some advice for my current fictional league.
So here's the situation, I just finished a 59-win season with my team. 3 seasons ago, I acquired the league's top 1B and possibly the top overall hitter in the league. I was hoping that I could have him as a cornerstone for my franchise and by now I would be getting ready to be a winning team. Things have not gone to plan and I just finished my worst season yet. Snyder, the 1B i'm talking about, has been absolutely outstanding. He can hit .340+ with 40+ homers and has led the league in .OPS in the past 3 seasons, he is a really special player. He is currently 29 years old and has 3 more years left on his contract at $10 million a year. Considering my TOTAL budget is only 50 million and I only get to spend about 30 million on player salaries, he is a huge chunk of my payroll. I honestly do not think I will be winning any time soon. Do I trade Snyder for a package of prospects that I could build my team around? or do I stick with Snyder and hope that my current young players blossom and I have a chance to start being a contender before Snyder is too old? Thanks guys! |

In my opinion wasting one third of the whole payroll for one player only is quite a bad deal. Even though he plays outstanding I would trade him for a package of players if I were you. I like to have a good overall team containing of 4 or more top performers for a reasonable price.

Trade him. Idk how your league is set up, but in my leagues there's usually an abundance of talent at 1B. You could trade this cat for prospects and pick up a decent 1B elsewhere at a discount.

Think like a real GM.
Are the fans still coming? if so then keep him, you can get used to losing but he's drawing in the fans. Trading him might not get you a championship, dollars now are always better then dollars later. Plus when you lose him in FA you can blame it on the money and say you tried, the fans will still come. |

Trade him for lots of shiny, low-salary prospects.

Not necessarily, because depending on the situation, the risk involved, the number of years involved, inflation rates and the amounts in question, future cash or cost savings actually can be better - even much better - than dollars now.
Trust me on this one.

Find the best package of prospects for him and help him pack his bags. You are needlessly hamstringing yourself laying out 1/3 of your salary on one position anyway.
I really suggest looking into platoons at a few positions to maximize production for discounted rates.

Do you have prospects in AAA or AA who might help you in 1-2 seasons? If not, trade him for a package of at least three prospects, two of which are within two years of being ready for the big leagues. That may be tough to find, but you should be picky about what you want for a guy who's probably the best player in the game.

I agree, gotta trade the guy. Move him for maximum return. His contract also helps in his marketability being that they are getting a guy locked up for multiple years.

Help with trading
Could you guys let me know how you find a good prospect package to trade for. I know when I need to get rid of someone via trade, however other than spending hours putting packages together and seeing if they would take it or not, is there another way that is quicker to find a trade.
Thanks in advance |

I enable draft pick trading, so for me, unloading a top-tier player for a prospect and a mid-round pick usually feels pretty good. |

I was reading that and thought "No, no he didn't!" and then was relieved to see that he actually hadn't.
