Problem with modern names

OK, so I copied the Quest Dog modern names files into the database folder, renamed the files there original_first_names, Original_names, etc., and took Questdog off the new sets to leave them as first_names, names, etc. This was what I understood to do from the read me instructions.

However, whenever I start a new fictional games, all playeers, personnel, etc. are named Jim Unknown. I tried hitting the reimport names & ethnicities, checked the US Modern and US Historical were set at 88 and 12 in the world files and still get the Jim Unknowns.

Any experts out there have ideas about what I'm doing wrong?

I'm curious as to why you would want to change the name files at all. The ones that come with the game rock.

According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

so you have a names file that says "first_names"
or no? otherwise try deleting all Jim Unknown's. Reimport names database and create fictional players.

The ones that come with the game seem to be fine to me, but in the skydog quickstart thread he raves about the questdog names file, says its much better than the one included. I've put it into the game, haven't had much of a chance to determine how good it is though.

Whatever. I just don't get it. I get realistic, logical sounding names across the board in 13. What more can you ask for?

I had a guy in my fictional game named Rob "Matchbox" Thomas. How can it get any better than that?

While The Wolf is a bit surly at times, this hints at a good overall point for people who are new to OOTP or the latest version: do yourselves a favor and try playing the game out of the box and with the mods you can install via Add-Ons Central from the intro menu.

While there are many fantastic mods available for the game and many settings you can change, I have noticed that there are a lot of people new to OOTP who are getting ideas from the forums and causing themselves far more confusion and complexity that is needed.

When you're trying to learn a new game or get up to speed with a new version, it's really not worthwhile to make it any tougher on yourself by trying to install mods and do a lot of tweaking on top of that. Start with the basics and see what you've got first.

Also, some of the mods are now obsolete with the improvements in OOTP over the past couple of versions, and some of the old threads about tweaking game settings are likewise no longer relevant.

By all means, play the game the way you want and feel free to download and install any mods you'd like. But maybe give yourself a chance to experience the game on its own terms. You might find that it already does exactly what you want.

While Charlie Hough is a bit surly at times, this essay is right on.

I don't think it can. I'm getting 100% name satisfaction right out of the box. Why fix what not only isn't broken but already works great?

Because Questdog promises 114% satisfaction. That's extra satisfaction!

So I've been using questdogs name file and it is noticeably better. Names just seem more realistic and ....better.
