Do teams ever become defunct?

I've noticed with the league evolution options that sometimes teams will move and sometimes there will be an expansion to create new teams. Do teams ever just fold and cease to exist? I've never seen it happen but I'm curious if this is even possible within OOTP.

From what I've gathered here on the forums, the OOTP engine doesn't do well with removing teams. There could be a way to remove teams, but as far as I know, you can only add teams.

You can manually delete teams in the league set-up tab, but I've probably simmed 400+ seasons with auto league evolution and I don't think I've seen a team just drop out.

Would definitely be a neat idea for pre-1900 historical league since a lot of teams popped up and left shortly after.

It does alright when manually removed. Nothing gets deleted (like the league association history for instance) and all of the players are made free agents.

At the major league level, outside the 19th century and third leagues, there have been no cases of teams going defunct and ceasing to exist. Teams may go bankrupt but they continue on nonetheless.

Where teams folding is common is in the minor leagues.

(Teams also relocate to a much greater degree in the minors. In the period from 1983 to the present, the overall rate of relocation in the minors was about 26 per 1,000 team-seasons, or one relocation every 38½ team-seasons. In MLB, from 1901 to the present, the rate was 6 relocations per 1,000 team-seasons, or one relocation every 165 team-seasons. In other words, teams relocated about four times as often in the minors as compared to the majors.)

I read in some thread that league evolution doesn't have any folding teams, although there were in the 19th century, so the number/location of teams is a little off for a few early seasons. I haven't actually tried deleting a team in any of my leagues so i don't know what exactly happens. Thanks for the info

The game won't automatically do it, but deleting a team is pretty easy. I intend to simulate folding teams in my fictional league.

I believe some people devised methods for holding a dispersal draft, but I believe it involved doing some things outside of the game itself then reassigning players via commish mode.

I don't know that, with the way finances work so far in OOTP, the AI would be able to figure out how to fold a team, as opposed to relocating it. Maybe you all are really just talking about historical evolution; the financial engine seems less important for those.

What WOULD be really neat, IMO, is a way to trigger a dispersal draft, in the same way there's an expansion draft. I tried once to make an MLB season by manually reassigning players, and it created so many salary headaches it wasn't worth the effort.
