As the title suggests, this dynasty will kick off with the 1990 MLB season. Everything that took place in reality prior to it will be considered to have happened as the "backstory" for this dynasty, also. I tried this once before, maybe two or three years ago, but didn't get very far.

The reason I chose 1990 is that it was the first season when I started following baseball from down here in Australia, as a 15 year-old. I can remember video taping delayed broadcasts of the World Series between the Reds and As and then watching them the next day, being intrigued and excited about this sport which was new and exciting to me.

It was all part of my discovery of American sports that started in 1989 when I took an interest in the NFL. They started broadcasting it on our own ABC station, with a "Game of the Week" and highlights package on Tuesday nights. My mum and dad also took an interest and the 49ers became my mum's favourite team, so she was happy when they beat the Broncos in the Superbowl.

At the time Michael Jordan was becoming an international superstar and basketball was reaching previously unheard of levels of popularity down here. There was a Saturday morning extended version of NBA Action that would feature the half-hour show and also a single game, and I remember fondly getting swept up in the excitement of following the sport along with my friends. The 1990 season, when the Pistons beat the Blazers in the Finals, was the first one we witnessed.

I've been a constant fan of the three sports ever since.

Starting the dynasty in 1990 also makes sense as it's a "neat" place to commence, as is any "first year of a decade", really. I have some plans in regards to expansion and league re-alignment that will differ from what happened in reality, and I will say right up front that I won't be introducing the wildcard. It may have led to some incredible excitement back in October, but in this dynasty it won't be starring. It will be interesting to see how things turn out compared to in real life: Will the Yankees and Braves enjoy the same success? Will the Red Sox break their drought, WITHOUT the wildcard there to get them into the postseason? Will the home run record be threatened? Will the Cubs become contenders? Will the Pittsburgh Pirates show the same promise, AND somehow manage to retain BB? Will Bo Jackson have a long, illustrious career?

We'll find out the answers to all those questions and many more as this dynasty progresses. I hope you all follow along with me.

Our story begins on the 1st of January 1990. The Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner dark comedy "War of the Roses" sits atop the US Box Office, and Phil Collins' "Another Day In Paradise" goes into the new decade as the #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. Comedy rules TV land, with Roseanne, The Cosby Show and Cheers the top three rating shows. In the Major Leagues, the Oakland Athletics are not only preparing for the defense of their World Championship, they are also out to extend their streak of consecutive American League Championships to three. Most of the experts believe they'll struggle to achieve that goal, with the consensus being that their starting pitcher rotation, led by 33 year-old veteran Dave Stewart, is poor. Not even the presence on their roster of two of the league's best outfielders in Rickey Henderson and Jose Canseco will change that opinion.

Some observers are predicting the first all-Canadian World Series, believing that both the Montreal Expos and Toronto Blue Jays have the personnel to go all the way. They're expecting Toronto to not only repeat as AL East champions, but go one step further than they did in '89 and make their first appearance in the Fall Classic. They're led by the power-hitting 1st baseman Fred McGriff. Meanwhile, Montreal possesses two of MLB's most promising young talents in 23 year-old right fielder Larry Walker and 21 year-old 2nd baseman Delino DeShields. It's a strong foundation that the front office believes they can build a long-term contender around. One of the big stories of the preseason will be the future of Boston Red Sox ace Roger Clemens. Entering his seventh season, Clemens' contract with Boston is in its final year and the Ohio native has yet to confirm whether he'll be staying for 1991 and beyond...

1990 MLB REGULAR SEASON
NOTEWORTHY INCIDENTS - APRIL

2 April: On Opening Day in Detroit, Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Roger Clemens threw a 3-hit shutout, walking one and striking out nine on 119 pitches. Sam Horn hit a solo homer leading off the 2nd before Wade Boggs crushed a 2-out Grand Slam in the 5th. Jack Morris recorded the loss for the Tigers, giving up eight hits and five earned runs in five innings.

3 April: In a move that sent shockwaves through the Gotham sports community, the New York Yankees traded 28 year-old first baseman Don Mattingly and 22 year-old minor league left fielder Ed Griffin to the Cleveland Indians, getting 27 year-old starting pitcher John Farrell in return.

3 April: The Detroit Tigers signed 32 year-old second baseman Lou Whitaker to a 2-year, $4.13million contract extension.

3 April: The defending champion Oakland Athletics kicked off their campaign with a 5-2 defeat at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Kevin Tapani was the winning pitcher for the Twins, giving up eight hits and two earned runs while striking out six and walking two in 7.1 innings of work. Dave Stewart pitched all eight innings for Oakland, conceding nine hits and three earned runs. He also struck out six batters.

4 April: Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg drove in six runs while hitting 3-3 with three walks in his ballclub's 12-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Veterans Stadium. Sandberg smashed 3-run homers in both the 4th and 6th innings.

7 April: California Angels designated hitter Brian Downing drove in seven runs in a dramatic 11-10 loss against the Oakland Athletics at the Coliseum. The two teams combined for 33 hits and five home runs, with Downing accounting for two of them. He was 3-4 with a walk and two runs scored. The Angels led 5-0 after the 1st and 7-2 after the 3rd. They took a 9-5 advantage into the 7th, where the Athletics scored five to take the lead, 10-9. Both clubs scored a run in the 8th to bring about the final score.

7 April: Montreal Expos starting pitcher Oil Can Boyd threw a complete game shutout against the Philadelphia Phillies, striking out seven and conceding just three hits in a 5-0 Expos win.

10 April: The California Angels traded 27 year-old center fielder Devon White and 24 year-old minor league starting pitcher Scott Lewis to the New York Yankees, getting 30 year-old right fielder Jesse Barfield and 24 year-old minor league second baseman Cecil Thomas in return.

13 April: Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Erik Hanson struck out thirteen batters in a 3-1 win over the Oakland Athletics at the Kingdome. Hanson went eight innings, conceding just two hits and an earned run while also walking only one batter on 104 pitches.

16 April: In another bombshell early season trade, the Chicago Cubs sent 30 year-old second baseman Ryne Sandberg, 19 year-old minor league right fielder Michael Byers and 29 year-old reliever Paul Assenmacher to the Los Angeles Dodgers, getting 30 year-old starting pitcher Mike Morgan and 22 year-old minor league left fielder Herbert Clancey in return.

22 April: Boston Red Sox center fielder Ellis Burks became the second player this season to record seven RBIs in a game in his ballclub's 10-1 blowout of the Brewers in Milwaukee. Batting third as the DH, Burks went 4-5 with a run scored, two doubles and a home run. Red Sox starter Dana Kiecker had a great afternoon, giving up just four hits and striking out five while going the distance.

24 April: The Kansas City Royals signed 26 year-old starting pitcher Bret Saberhagen to a 1-year, $2.09million contract extension. He had injured his elbow two days earlier, the injury set to keep him out of action for three weeks.

24 April: In an amazing performance, Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Roger Clemens set a new season high for strikeouts in a game when he fanned fifteen in his side's 1-0 loss to the California Angels. In a classic pitcher's duel with a duration of only 2:31, Clemens gave up just three hits and walked one batter, but his opponent Chuck Finley was a little bit better in improving to 4-0 on the season. Finley went eight innings, allowing two hits, walking four batters and striking out six. Clemens fell to 2-3, despite his ERA being just 1.10.

26 April: 39 year-old California Angels starting pitcher Bert Blyleven was injured while pitching. The diagnosis was a torn labrum in his shoulder. He was expected to miss about eleven months, a tough injury at this stage of his career.

1990 MLB REGULAR SEASON
NOTEWORTHY INCIDENTS - MAY

3 May: The New York Mets suffered a double injury blow in a 4-hour, 45-minute, 16-inning 4-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Both right fielder Darryl Strawberry and center fielder Lance Johnson were injured late in the game while fielding. Johnson fractured his ribs in the 14th inning while Strawberry's injury was a torn meniscus in his knee. Both players were expected to miss 3-4 weeks. 28 year-old Strawberry was hitting .268 with five home runs and 17 RBI.

6 May: New York Yankees second baseman Steve Sax and California Angels starting pitcher Mike Witt were ejected and subsequently suspended for five games after inciting a bench-clearing brawl in the bottom of the 1st inning of a game at Yankees Stadium. New York center fielder Devon White had given the Yankees a 4-0 lead with a two-run homer only moments earlier. Witt's 0-2 offering caught Sax high on the left bicep and he charged the mound, leading to the wild brawl. The Yankees went on to win the game 6-3, with Witt taking the loss for the visitors.

7 May: The San Diego Padres traded 30-year-old right fielder Joe Carter and 24-year-old minor league starting pitcher Ánibal Romero to the Toronto Blue Jays, getting 30-year-old reliever John Cerutti and 24-year-old minor league starting pitcher Júlio López in return.

9 May: Only five weeks after acquiring him from the Yankees, the Cleveland Indians placed first baseman Don Mattingly on the trading block. He had only appeared in five games through the opening of the season, starting in two of them and hitting 0-7.

16 May: The San Francisco Giants signed 28 year-old left fielder Kevin Mitchell to a 1-year, $1.90million contract extension.

18 May: California Angels right fielder Jesse Barfield became the first player of the season to drive in eight runs in a game. He achieved the feat in an 18-2 drubbing of the Toronto Blue Jays at the Skydome. Barfield was 4-5 with three runs scored. He hit two homers, the first a 1-out grand slam in the 3rd and the second a 3-run shot in the 9th. At the game's conclusion his season totals had increased to ten home runs and 34 RBI, with a batting average of .297 for the struggling Angels.

19 May: On a slightly cloudy Saturday afternoon and in front of a Fenway Park crowd of 29,790, Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Roger Clemens threw the first NO-HITTER of his already superb career in a 6-0 defeat of the Minnesota Twins. Clemens struck out nine batters and walked two on 121 pitches. He was carried off the field on the shoulders of Wade Boggs and Sam Horn at the game's conclusion to a standing ovation from the Fenway faithful. The win improved his season record to 6-4, with an ERA of 1.42.

Later that evening in San Diego, New York Mets starter Dwight Gooden threw a 2-hit shutout of the Padres in an 8-0 Mets victory. Gooden struck out five batters and walked none on just 97 pitches. The outing continued Gooden's fantastic start to the season as he improved to 5-1 with an ERA of 1.96 for the 1st-placed Mets.

20 May: The Chicago Cubs signed 30 year-old starting pitcher Mike Bielecki to a 4-year, $5.17million contract extension.

22 May: Ten days after driving in six runs in a win over the Orioles, Oakland Athletics right fielder Jose Canseco went one better in a 10-4 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays. Canseco was 3-5 with two runs scored and seven RBI, all of which came on a pair of home runs: a 3-run blast in the 1st inning and a 1-out grand slam in the 9th, which blew open an up-until-then-tight ballgame. The haul improved Canseco's RBI tally to 46 on the season and his home run count to thirteen.

22 May: The Atlanta Braves received some terrible news when it was discovered their closer Tony Castillo would require season-ending surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow. He was expected to miss eight months. In seventeen appearances, 27 year-old Castillo was 0-3 but had recorded ten saves with only one blown. His ERA was 4.61.

29 May: Both the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Dodgers extended winning streaks that had started on the 21st of May to nine games. LA's win was a big one, with Kal Daniels homering twice and driving in six runs in a 12-3 rout of the Pirates in Pittsburgh. The streak propelled the Dodgers to the best record in the majors at that point while Oakland surged up to 3rd place in the AL West (Oakland's streak ended the following day, with the Dodgers losing on the final day of the month to see their own streak halted at ten games).

31 May: The Los Angeles Dodgers signed 34 year-old first baseman Eddie Murray to a 2-year, $5.51million contract extension.

Very interesting. Have you considered using logo and facegen mods? There is a great one that has almost every conceivable face gen for real players. Jose Canseco and Rickey Henderson are dead-on in it.

Can't be bothered, to be honest. A couple of months ago I inquired in the mods forum about getting player photos into the game and no one could accurately tell me how to do it, which just made me . I PMd Markus and t_wil about it and that didn't help either. It was actually delaying me from starting the dynasty so I just said "stuff it" and went ahead without them.

Fair enough. It's just aesthetics. I do think it's cool seeing a lifelike facegen of Rickey Henderson posing in a Giants uniform. It is a little tricky, but once you get the hang of it, it's worth it.

Might be something I'd be interested in. Could you please point me in the right direction? Thanks.

I haven't abandoned it. Just either haven't been in the mood or had the time to work on it the last couple weeks. In addition, to be honest, I'm trying to avoid working on it too much.

In the past I've burnt myself out on dynasties because I thought it was important to keep it going and post often to so those reading it would be happy and entertained.

My attitude now is to work on it when I feel like it, even if a couple of weeks go by between posts. I really want to see this one through right until the present day, to see how everything turns out.

I also have a boxing dynasty in the Inside the Ropes forum that I have been working on for about three and a half years (link in my sig).

I'll probably work on the June 1990 review on the weekend, which will include news from the draft.

1990 MLB REGULAR SEASON
NOTEWORTHY INCIDENTS - JUNE

4 June: Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Jose Mesa threw a 1-hit shutout against the Milwaukee Brewers at County Stadium in a 5-0 victory. Mesa struck out four batters and walked three on 123 pitches, improving his record to 4-4 and his ERA to 3.04. Teddy Higuera was the losing pitcher for Milwaukee, falling to 8-4 after giving up three earned runs on six hits in seven innings.

The evening also saw Texas Rangers starting pitcher Nolan Ryan strike out eleven batters and concede just two hits in a 2-1 win over the California Angels at Arlington Stadium. Ryan threw 120 pitches and improved to 5-5, his ERA 4.65. Jeff Huson scored the winning run on a 2-out bases loaded error by Angels shortstop Kent Anderson in the bottom of the 9th.

6 June: Cleveland Indians third baseman Brook Jacoby fractured his ankle while running the bases after hitting a double in the 3rd inning of a 2-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Stadium. The diagnosis all but ended Jacoby's season, as he was expected to be out of action for four months.

8 June: Chicago Cubs third baseman Luis Diaz drove in an MLB season-high nine RBI in his ballclub's 12-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field. Diaz cracked a bases loaded 3-RBI triple in the 4th, a 2-run homer in the 6th and a 3-run shot in the 7th. The Georgia-born 22 year-old rookie came into the game hitting just .192 with twelve RBIs on the season.

9 June: Having struck out eleven batters in his last start on June 4, Texas Rangers starter Nolan Ryan recorded thirteen more. The opponent on both occasions was the California Angels, but this second meeting took place at Anaheim Stadium. There was another difference, being that despite Ryan's fantastic efforts the Rangers lost. California triumphed 1-0 in a 14-inning four-hour marathon. Ryan went head-to-head with Angels hurler Chuck Finley through the first eight innings, throwing 110 pitches and giving up three hits in the no-decision.

18 June: New York Mets starting pitcher Dwight Gooden threw a 2-hit shutout against the St. Louis Cardinals. Gooden struck out twelve batters and walked only one on 132 pitches, improving his season record to an outstanding 9-2 and lowering his ERA to 2.00. Gooden was assisted by the efforts of second baseman Gregg Jefferies and center fielder Lance Johnson, who both hit 2-run homers in New York's 4-0 win.

21 June: The Toronto Blue Jays signed 30 year-old center fielder Joe Carter to a 2-year, $2.54million contract extension. It came only six weeks after the Blue Jays had acquired Carter in a trade with San Diego.

23 June: The Oakland Athletics signed 26 year-old first baseman Mark McGuire to a 1-year, $2.09million contract extension.

25 June: Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Greg Swindell threw a 1-hit shutout against the Milwaukee Brewers, his second shutout in as many starts. Cleveland were victorious 9-0, with second baseman Tom Brookens driving in four runs on two hits. Swindell struck out seven batters and walked two on 109 pitches.

26 June: The Cincinnati Reds signed 25 year-old starting pitcher Jose Rijo to a 3-year, $5.62million contract extension.

27 June: Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Kevin Tapani threw a 2-hit shutout against the Texas Rangers. Tapani struck out ten batters and walked two, throwing 114 pitches. He improved to 6-7 on the season, with his ERA 3.77. Third baseman Gary Gaetti drove in three runs in the 7-0 victory.
