Season Batting Leaders

Real Stuff

  • Oscar Charleston is considered by many Negro Leagues experts to have been the greatest ballplayer of the Negro Leagues. Bill James ranked him as fourth-greatest player of all time in his New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract.
  • Bunny Brief holds the all-time record for homers in the American Association with 256. His eight minor league home run crowns are tied for the most ever, with Ken Guettler.
  • Dobie Moore was a Negro League shortstop and right-handed hitter who played his entire Negro Leagues career with the Kansas City Monarchs. His career was ended abruptly by an off-field injury in the middle of his seventh season.

Season Pitching Leaders

Real Stuff

  • Joe Pate, pitching mostly for the Ft. Worth Cats, was among the most successful pitchers in the Texas League history. In 13 seasons, he won 195 games and lost 93.
  • Ewart "Dixie" Walker pitched four seasons for the Washington Senators. He was a year older than teammate Walter Johnson and was his roommate.
  • Claude "Lefty" Williams was banned from baseball for his participation in fixing the 1919 World Series. A short man at 5'9", he relied on his curve ball and the excellent defensive outfield of the Chicago White Sox for his success in the majors.

Hall of Fame Selections

  • Selections are made using muted79’s HOF Monitor Excel Spreadsheet
  • The spreadsheet is based on the HOF standards test found at Baseball-Reference.com - Major League Baseball Statistics and History
  • Minimum of 50 points are needed for selection; although that does not guarantee selection
  • Players must be retired for 5 years; 6 players were eligible this year

Results for pitchers
  1. Eddie Plank - 60
  2. Ned Garvin - 53 (stats didn't justify selection to the HOF)

Results for position players
  1. Roger Bresnahan - 39
  2. Tommy Leach - 28
  3. Tom McCreery - 28
  4. George Stone - 22
