Anyone use the custom award, and if so for what?

I like the fact that we have it, I just never know what to do with it - any thoughts?

It goes to my MVP since we don't really have that award

I've never used it. I mean, I know it's there but I've never played with it.

That being said, I'd LOVE for the custom award feature to be improved. It would be awesome if the user could select certain statistics and assign a point value to them. At the end of the season, the player with the most points automatically wins the award.

a few leagues ago I used to use it for Postseason MVP, but the game handles that award just so poorly, that I have stopped using it for a while now.

I use it for MPP: Most Popular Player. The guy who gets it has the highest current national popularity and the highest career VORP. Sometimes it changes from year to year, sometimes it's traded back and forth between two or three players, and sometimes it's kept like a personal dynasty by one player for five years or more, like a Willie Mays.

I use it as an "Elite Performer Award", basically if someone has an exceptionally good season over and above the usual MVP/CY Young level (11+ WAR). On average it's only awarded once or twice a decade.

Same here. I can't understand why there still isn't a true MVP award in OOTP after all these years, especially after Verlander just won it last season. If we can have a Rookie of the Year award that considers both hitters and pitchers, why couldn't the same calculation be used to determine the MVP? Granted, it should probably be tweaked to favor hitters a bit more than the ROY does, but I can't imagine that would be too complicated to code.

Anyway, it would be nice if there were several more award options added, including the ability to have each award given out either per-subleague or for the entire league. Even if no more automatic awards are added, maybe it's time to add the option for a few more custom awards.

Custom awards need a bit of an upgrade. And it has already been mentioned, but the appropriate stats need to be display on the screen, they need to be treated right in contracts and popularity, and I do not like how when filling out custom awards, it destroys that natrual release of the awards, the one a day thing.

I have mainly used it as a Post-Season MVP award, but have also used it for Most Improved or Comeback Player award as well.

Similar to me. I use it for the Maple Leaf Award in my Canada Baseball League. It goes to the most popular Canadian-born player with the highest VORP in the league.

I wish I could use it for the Silver Slugger awards in my MLB league, but we can only choose one recipient. If it was set up so we could use it like the fielding award it would work for this.

I rename the Outstanding Hitter Award to the Most Valuable Player Award and I am perfectly happy with Justin Verlander not winning it, TYVM.

thats fine, because verlander wasnt the most valuable player in the first place,...

but the "hitter award" favors average way too much it seems.

but in my universe the best hitter award actually means something, so i usually pick the best overall player for the MVP. unlike MLB where nobody cares about any other hitter awards so the MVP is the hitter award by default. because pitchers already have an award.

it would be nice if in the screen where you can edit the awards, you could add the conditions to which the award is chosen. like you could add AVG, HR, RBI, and assign them weights, like you want average to be 50% of the equation. be nice if you could add team record and supporting cast in to the mix too (for an mvp award)

Its clear that is how OOTP is intended to be played. It even has it listed on certain pages as MVP, like the Hall of Fame.

That is also how I have always done it. Not ideal, but I have done it that from day one playing OOTP (and that is a loooooong time), so it is just second nature to me.

I also want to see Manager of the Year fall into the list of awards that can be manually selected. But alas, it is not, and the whole botched up hot mess that is awarding it to a human player, inspite of that player having employed a field manager (but that is a different thread).

Not if you pick the winners yourself, which I always do.

Does the custom award show up in the player history in 13? That was my issue with custom award in pervious versions.

MVP for me which i usually call the Babe Ruth Award.u
I think manager of the year and reliever of the year should be in the game or at least an option to select the amount of custom awards your league needs. And the progression of the award name changes would be nice in history of the league.
