MLB Quickstart

I am wanting to start a quickstart, are there any options I should change or anything I should adjust before I start to make it a more enjoyable experience?

This is a really broad question, and I'm going to give you what looks like a pat answer, but maybe not.

If you are new to the game (your forum account goes back to January 2011 but you did post this in the New to the Game forum), I recommend that you change nothing except for the options that I checked below (managing the Yankees is definitely recommended, but optional ).

If you Play in Commissioner Mode, you can start on any level and with any team and you can explore a bit more to see how things work. Just be careful not to change things without knowing what you're doing, and realize that some of the things that you can do (like player editing) cannot be done if you are not commissioner.

I would also select the Cannot be Fired option; this will save you considerable frustration as you learn the game. It can be demoralizing to be dumped just as you're finally learning the ropes and turning your team around. You can always take on this challenge sometime in the future.

On the other hand, I joked about managing the Yankees, but maybe you don't want to manage at all! You could just lurk for a while and see how the game works. The trouble with this approach, however, is that you're not really playing the game and therefore not really learning how to play. Still, you could observe for a year or two and then seize control of a team (remember, you have to be commissioner to do this).

All right, I will recommend changes in one area. Once you're in control of a team, you ought to be able to decide who's going to run it, you or the AI! Go to Manager Options, Team Controls, and set whether it's you or it for such things as Setting Lineups and Reacting to Trades. Also, what news do you want? Maybe leave all news items selected for now until you become more familiar.

That's it! I would not change anything in Global Setup or League Setup until I knew more about what I'm doing. Continue to search and read these forums and the online manual to learn more, and snoop and tinker here and there. Enjoy!

Thanks.

If I don't select a team and don't play in commish mode, will a team eventually offer me a contract?

If I start on an single A team or even triple A, how long does it usually take before a major league team wants to hire me?

Yes, you usually will get offers right away to sign on with minor league teams. Also, I think that's the case even if you are commissioner, and I also think that as commissioner you cannot be fired, IIRC. The truly risky thing to do is to start as non-commissioner and with the cannot be fired option off. I have not played as minor league manager in quite a while, but I remember it would take several seasons until you had enough experience to be offered a major league job.
